Senator Martins Introduces Bill to Assist Veteran-Owned Businesses

In an effort to assist veterans from New York State in establishing businesses, New York State Senator Jack M. Martins has introduced a bill in the New York State Senate (S.6627) to promote the participation of veteran-owned businesses in the performance of state contracts.

Under Senator Martins’ bill, three percent of all contracts from state contracting agencies would be awarded to veteran-owned businesses, ensuring that certified, veteran-owned businesses be given the opportunity to participate in the performance of state contracts. A veteran-owned business is described an a business enterprise that is at least 51 percent owned by a veteran who is a resident of New York State and has served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

Senator Martins Inducts American Hero Posthumously Into NYS Senate Veterans Hall of Fame

Sergeant James John Regan always wanted to be an Army Ranger. Upon graduating from Duke University, the Manhasset resident and Chaminade High School grad decided to forgo a job offer from a prominent financial services company and a scholarship to law school in order to serve his country. While in his fourth tour of duty, Sergeant Regan lost his life in Iraq, but his sacrifice and courage will forever endure.

On Tuesday, May 22, Senator Jack M. Martins had the privilege of inducting Sergeant Regan into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. Mary Regan, Sergeant Regan’s mother, traveled to Albany to accept the honor.

Making Memorial Day Count

Another Memorial Day weekend has passed us by, and I was fortunate enough to be included at some of the many parades and ceremonies that paid tribute to the men and women who died serving in our armed forces. Thankfully, I think most of us agree that honoring those who served, living and deceased, is a good and necessary thing. But I also recognize that there are those for whom the meaning of the day has been lost; who see it more as the start of summer than anything else.

Senator Martins Congratulates Mineola American Legion's First Female Member

The Mineola American Legion Post #349 was honored to welcome its first ever female member during its last meeting at Mineola Village Hall. Commander Carl Marchese and Manny Grilo, who is the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Private Adolph Block Post #1305, as well as Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated Mineola resident Yuri Karasz on her membership to the post.

“Yuri Karasz is an outstanding member of the community who accomplished so much. She served our country and now is helping others pursue their dreams of becoming medical professionals. The Mineola American Legion is an outstanding veterans organization and has only been further enriched by having her as a member,” said Senator Martins.
