Thinking Is Hard Work

Just mention a tax break and New Yorkers’ eyes light up with sheer joy. You can’t blame us. We pay some of the highest property and personal income taxes in the country. That’s why Governor Cuomo’s most recent proposal for a nearly $1.7 billion tax credit known as a “circuit breaker” was initially met with such enthusiasm. I was initially enthusiastic about it too, but having examined it more closely, I’m afraid I have to throw a bit of cold water on what isn’t really a well-thought out plan.

SENATOR MARTINS STATEMENT ON NASSAU OTB ENDING FORTUNOFF CASINO PROPOSAL

“Earlier today, Nassau OTB officially abandoned its plan to put a VLT facility at the former Fortunoff’s Store in Westbury.

This is welcome news for all of us who have spent the last several weeks telling OTB that a VLT facility does not belong at this site. It is too close to our homes, our schools, and it would have a negative impact on the community.

I thank OTB for finally listening to the thousands of residents, community leaders, and elected officials who voiced their concerns and abandoning its plan.”

SENATOR MARTINS STATEMENT ON LAWSUIT TO STOP NASSAU OTB'S FORTUNOFF CASINO PROPOSAL

"For weeks we have been telling OTB that Fortunoff's is the wrong place for a VLT facility, period. It's too close to our homes, to our schools, and has no place in our community. The entire community, its elected officials, and leaders stand united in opposition. The Town of Hempstead has confirmed what everyone outside of OTB has known all along; that this facility is too close to our homes. OTB needs to listen to the community and walk away."

Where is the Assembly?

For the third time in the past year, I joined the overwhelming majority of my Senate colleagues in, once again, voting for a series of women’s equality bills that fight discrimination in our laws, ensure equal pay for equal work, and assist women who are victims of human trafficking, violence, and harassment. These are great bills that would do a great deal to address the inequality plaguing so many women in our society. So, with each of these bills having passed the Senate, the question remains, where is the Assembly?

SENATOR MARTINS STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR CUOMO’S STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

“Governor Cuomo’s State of the State continues to place an important focus on what I believe are the key priorities that have helped put New York State back in the right direction: cutting taxes, controlling state spending, and growing our economy.

Working together in a bipartisan manner over the last four years, we’ve achieved some great things: the lowest income tax and business tax rates in decades, a functioning and fiscally responsible state government, a much improved business climate, and smart investments in economic development, infrastructure, and education. The Governor stated that we must 'keep doing what we’ve been doing,' and I completely agree.

Thoughts As We Honor Dr. King

I grew up in what can only be described as a blue collar household, in a community where a premium was placed on hard work, self sufficiency, and respecting authority in all forms - parents, teachers, elders, and the police. There was no backtalk or mouthing off and certainly no attacking those in authority. It wasn't even imaginable.
