Senator Martins Visits Eden II Genesis School for Individuals with Autism

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited the Eden II Genesis  School in Plainview for individuals with Autism. The Eden II Genesis program has been a leader in the intervention and education of invididuals with Autism for over 30 years. The satellite school in Plainview opened in September 1995.

The school offers speach therapy and adaptive physical education per IEP mandates. As children age of the education system, they enter the Adult Day Hab program, which focuses on community integration, increasing independence and activities of daily living, socialization and developing and enhancing skill acquisition at various job sites.

Senator Martins Celebrates International Culture at Elmont Memorial High School

Hundreds of students and community members jammed Elmont Memorial High School’s gymnasium this past Friday evening to celebrate “International Night!“ The evening is a celebration of community, diversity and culture. From the shores of Jamaica and Haiti to India, Dominican Republic, Nigeria, Barbados, Mexico and everywhere in between, food, fun and fashion ruled the evening. Senator Jack M. Martins was invited to the celebration and was welcomed to the evening of culture by Principal John Capozzi and students led by Kyle Johnson, Candice Chatterpaul, Ben Odugbesan, Elijah Ross and organizers.

Senator Martins Congratulates Eagle Scout Antonio Pereira

Senator Jack M. Martins honored Elmont Eagle Scout Antonio Pereira during an Eagle Court of Honor at the American Legion. Senator Martins was joined by Valley Stream Mayor Ed Fare, Elmont VFW member Richard Gales, Justice Robert Bogle, Assistant Commissioner of the Theodore Roosevelt Boy Scouts Donna Jean Serra of Elmont, Assemblyman Ra, Robert Becker of Boy Scouts, Cheryl Tansey, Committee Chair of Crew 116 and Boy Scouts from throughout the Elmont, North Valley Stream and South Floral Park communities.

Senator Martins Presides as Judge in Manorhaven School Mock Trial

A classroom in the Manorhaven School in Port Washington served as a court room on Friday, May 20 as the fifth grade Manorhaven Mock Trial Team conducted a civil trial complete with witnesses, exhibits and complete New York State Civil Procedure.

The case involved a woman, Jo Moncrieff, who was denied a position as a news field producer for a television station. The Plaintiff Team argued that the woman was the best qualified candidate but was denied the position because she is in a wheel-chair and was thus discriminated against. The Defense Team argued that the woman was not the best qualified candidate since the position of in-field news producer required the candidate to be able to get around quickly.

Senator Martins Holds 'Office Hours' and Community Listen Session in Floral Park

Senator Jack M. Martins was back in Floral Park as part of his community listening tour. The Floral Park Library was the scene for the latest installment of Martins’ community-based listening sessions where residents can discuss issues, concerns and ideas in a free-flowing discussion. The Floral Park session saw a steady stream of community members drop by to talk to the Senator. “I was very pleased with the turn-out and happy with the thoughtfulness of the questions and discussion surrounding the issues,” said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Visits Soccer Stars From Elmont, Cheers Them on to Victory

Senator Jack M. Martins dropped by the Elmont Soccer Club to catch a game and root-on some of Elmont's "great" soccer stars. Elmont Soccer President Richard "Kiki" DeBrosse welcomed Senator Martins to the game and introduced him to parents, soccer players and community members throughout the game.

"This is the second time I've come by Elmont Soccer this month. The first time I was able to check out the practices and see our young people learning the fundamentals. Today, I got to see their skills in action. It was a great game and I congratulate Elmont on their win. I also want to thank the parents, Kiki and the kids for their warm hospitality," said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Addresses Great Neck Chamber of Commerce

Senator Jack M. Martins was welcomed by the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce at recent Thursday morning breakfast meeting at the Inn of Great Neck, where he answered numerous questions from chamber members.

Having taken office as Senator of the Seventh Senate District this past January, Martins is making his way around the district on days he isn’t in Albany to discuss both local and state issues with the residents, elected officials and businesses owners of the community.

Senator Martins was introduced by Great Neck Chamber of Commerce President Valerie Link of Anton Community Newspapers. He kept his initial comments brief, speaking about the importance of local governments such as villages, so that chamber members would have the opportunity to ask questions.

Senator Martins: We Need Tax Relief Now

Urges Assembly to Pass the Tax Cap

Senator Jack M. Martins and his Senate colleagues from Long Island made a push to get the Assembly to pass a 2 percent tax cap as a means to bring property tax relief to Long Island families at a press conference on Thursday. Governor Andrew Cuomo has been a proponent of the cap, which was already passed by the Senate. The bill just needs approval from the Assembly to become law.

Senator Martins Visits Barry Tech in Westbury

Senator Jack M. Martins visited Barry Tech in Westbury recently to learn about the programs offered to the students. The Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Center allows students to learn skills to enhance their high school experience. The school, which is a part of Nassau BOCES, prepares juniors and seniors for college and for the workforce by providing them with specialized training in a vast array of fields.

Senator Martins toured the school, visiting the cosmetology, graphic design, television, cooking, veterinary science, welding, piloting and forensic science classes.

Senator Martins Co-Sponsors Brittany's Law

Act Would Create Registry for Violent Felons

The New York State Senate today passed with wide bi-partisan support Brittany’s Law (S.3645B), a bill that would establish a statewide violent felony offender registry by requiring offenders to register with the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services upon release from prison. The law is intended to increase the safety of all New Yorkers by providing access to the list of convicted violent offenders.

In just a few months in Albany, we have made considerable progress in getting New York State back on track. When the Assembly, Senate and Governor have worked together toward a common goal, we have seen that we are capable of making significant improvements in our State. This was the case in March when the Senate worked with the Governor on a state budget. Not only was this highly complex and contentious process completed on time, but more significantly, it represented a change from past practices that have repeatedly failed the residents of New York. We were able to successfully balance the State budget and close a $10 billion deficit while not raising any taxes or fees.

Senator Martins Votes to Create New Panel to Support Aging Veterans

The New York State Senate approved legislation to help older veterans by creating an advisory committee that specifically assists state officials in addressing important veterans issues. New York has the second highest veteran population in the United States and bill S.3337, supported by Senator Jack M. Martins, focuses on improving the care and state support available to aging veterans by creating a panel of gerontology and veterans’ issue experts.

“Our veterans have done so much to ensure our freedom. We need to make certain they receive the best care and support programs. I was proud to have supported this legislation,” said Senator Martins. “It’s an opportunity to show our veterans we will never forget the sacrifices they made for us.”

Senator Martins Attends Installation For Floral Park Centre Fire Company

Senator Jack M. Martins recently attended the 86th Annual Installation Dinner Dance for the Floral Park Centre Fire Company.

Among the honorees were: Thomas Garland for 25 years of service; James Ficht and Thomas Freeman for 25 years of service; William Delgado, Leonard Garofalo, Thomas Garofalo and Kenneth Weigel for 20 years of service and Kevin Moon for five years of service.

Also, ex-chief John A. Brady received honors posthumously for his service to the company.

Senator Jack M. Martins is looking forwad to working with Winthrop University Hospital on the construction of the new Research Institute. The plan calls for the hospital to consolidate its medical research programs under one roof in a state-of-the-science facility.

Relive Elmont Pitcher Danny Aguilo's Amazing Performance

Elmont Memorial High School sophomore Danny Augilo's had a game pitchers dream of. Against Hempstead, Aguilo threw a no-hitter while recording every out by strikeout for 21 total in the game. Senator Jack M. Martins was proud to recognize this amazing achievement. 

Senator Martins recognized another Elmont Memorial High School Spartan in pitcher Enrique Sanchez, who also pitched a no-hitter.

The Elmont Memorial High School baseball team is not short on pitching - that's for sure!
