Narcan Training Program-Hicksville

     To help combat the growing epidemic on prescription drug abuse and heroin, Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District), County Executive Ed Mangano, and Legislators Rose Walker and Laura Schaefer will be sponsoring a free Narcan training seminar for residents. The program will take place on Thursday, June 5th from 7 pm- 9 pm at the Hicksville Community Center (28 West Carl Street, Hicksville).

     By now, I’m sure you’ve seen or heard the phrase, “Bring Back Our Girls.” It’s the rallying cry of a movement to pressure the international community to rescue the 280 teenage schoolgirls who were brazenly kidnapped from their Nigerian classrooms on April 14th. The words have been tweeted over one million times across the internet and have generated numerous Facebook pages that count hundreds of thousands of followers. Even the “old” media has joined in as 24-hour news outlets vie to be the first to flash photos of celebrities holding the words emblazoned across their chests.

SENATE APPROVES SENATOR MARTINS’ LEGISLATION TO ENSURE SCHOOLS CONTINUE TO SAVE ON THEIR TRANSPORTATION COSTS

Legislation Would Make School Bus Mandate Relief Act Permanent

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to ensure school districts continue receiving mandate relief on their transportation costs. The legislation (S3141) would make the savings provided by the school bus mandate relief act permanent.

SENATOR MARTINS’ LEGISLATION TO CREATE “BILLY JOEL BOULEVARD” IN HICKSVILLE APPROVED BY TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that legislation he sponsored to create “Billy Joel Boulevard” in Hicksville has been approved by the Senate’s Transportation Committee.  The legislation (S6603) would rename Route 107 between Old Country Road and East John Street in downtown Hicksville, which is Billy Joel’s hometown, “Billy Joel Boulevard.”  Senator Martins is sponsoring the legislation with Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R-15th Assembly District).

SENATOR MARTINS CONGRATULATES ROSLYN STUDENT FOR EARNING FIRST PLACE IN SENATE’S EARTH DAY POSTER CONTEST

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) recently visited East Hills Elementary School in Roslyn to congratulate 2nd grade student Emma Pnini on being chosen as a first place winner in the Senate’s Earth Day Poster Contest.

     Emma’s entry focused on the importance of “reducing, reusing, and recycling” in order to protect the environment. As a first place winner, Emma’s poster was displayed in the State Legislative Office Building in Albany along with those of the other winners from across the state.

Walter Blum

Private Walter Blum of Great Neck was among the bravest Americans to storm the beaches of Normandy in the fight to liberate millions of people from the evils of tyranny.

Mr. Blum joined the United States Army in 1943, at the age of 18. As a member of the Corps of Engineers’ First Amphibious Engineers Brigade, he was among the fi rst Americans to land at Utah Beach on D-Day. Under fierce enemy fire which killed half the men in his brigade, he cleared enemy mines from the path of American landing boats, layed down steel mats to give Allied tanks a clear path to the beach and built field hospitals for wounded American soldiers.

SENATOR MARTINS SPEAKS TO GREAT NECK VETERANS

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) recently visited with members of the Great Neck Veterans Social Club at the Great Neck Senior Center. Senator Martins gave an update on some of the veterans related issues in the legislature, including a recently signed law which will help bring more opportunities to service-disabled veterans.

SENATOR MARTINS ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO BENEFIT DISABLED VETERANS

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced a new law which will facilitate the awarding of state contracts to disabled veterans. Senator Martins was a sponsor of the legislation, which was recently signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. 

     The “Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Act” will create a 6% state contract set aside for service-connected disabled veteran owned small businesses. The set aside is very similar to the highly successful 3% preference that the federal government offers.

SENATOR MARTINS ANNOUNCES SENATE PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION TO CREATE A REGISTRY OF VIOLENT OFFENDERS

“Brittany’s Law” Would Provide More Information About Potentially Dangerous Felons

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate passed “Brittany’s Law,” to increase the safety and awareness of communities by creating a public registry of convicted violent felons. The legislation (S1850B), of which Senator Martins is a sponsor, would establish a statewide violent felony offender registry by requiring certain convicted felons to register with the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) upon release from prison.

SENATOR MARTINS HONORS FLORAL PARK BOY SCOUTS FOR EARNING SCOUTING’S HIGHEST AWARD

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) announced that the New York State Senate has passed legislative resolutions he sponsored honoring four members of Boy Scout Troop 678 in Floral Park for attaining the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. 

     The legislative resolutions honored Christopher Bonomo, Matthew Dooley, Daniel May, and Benjamin Rispoli on earning Scouting’s highest honor. With passage of the resolutions, Christopher, Matthew, Daniel, and Benjamin’s achievements will forever be part of the official record of the New York State Senate.

     Senator Martins attended the Court of Honor held for the four scouts to personally congratulate them.

Rose Marie Walker

Rose Marie Walker is a pioneer for women in government and her accomplishments are impressive. A dedicated elected official, Ms. Walker embodies community service. She is not only a beloved mother and proud grandmother, she also manages to devote countless hours to residents and businesses in Nassau County.

A lifelong resident of Hicksville, Ms. Walker was first elected to represent the 17th Legislative District in 2009; residents  recognized her commitment and dedication by re-electing her in 2011 and again in 2013.

SENATOR MARTINS’ LEGISLATION RAISING PENALTIES FOR UNLICENSED DRIVERS PASSED BY SENATE

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to increase penalties for drivers who operate a vehicle without a driver’s license. The legislation would address an inequity in current law which allows unlicensed drivers to face lesser penalties than those who drive with a suspended license.
