SENATOR MARTINS VISITS ST. MARY’S CHURCH IN MANHASSET TO HONOR FATHER ANTHONY REFALO FOR 25 YEARS OF SERVICE

Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) recently visited St. Mary's Church in Manhasset to honor Father Anthony Refalo on his Silver Jubilee (25 years) of service as a priest.

Father Anthony served full-time at St. Mary's for nearly ten years before being transferred, but he continued to maintain a relationship with the parish. Even though he has lived in Malta since 1999, he returns twice a year, every year to the place he calls his "second home."

SENATOR MARTINS STATEMENT ON AGREEMENT TO AVOID LIRR STRIKE

“Today, Long Islanders got the news they’ve been hoping to hear; that a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) strike has been averted. The agreement between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and LIRR workers will ensure that Long Islanders do not suffer a strike which would have caused serious harm to our economy and gridlock across Long Island. Importantly, all sides have promised that this contract will not increase fares for already overburdened LIRR riders.

We’ve been urging Governor Cuomo to get personally involved to try and help the MTA and workers bridge the gap. I thank him for listening and applaud his efforts to bring all sides together to reach an agreement.”

SENATOR MARTINS APPLAUDS GOVERNOR CUOMO FOR DIRECTING MTA & LIRR WORKERS BACK TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE

“Governor Cuomo calling on the MTA and LIRR workers to go back to the negotiating table is a welcome step towards averting a LIRR strike.

We have been urging the Governor to bring both sides back to the table, and I thank him for doing so. A LIRR strike would be a disaster, would paralyze Long Island’s transportation infrastructure and cause up to $50 million in economic losses a day. Every Long Islander will be impacted, whether they commute or not. I thank the Governor for listening.

This is a positive step, but we are not out of the woods yet. I hope the Governor will continue his efforts personally to help both sides break the logjam and reach an agreement, before a strike occurs.”

“We need the Governor to bring both sides back together and mediate through this logjam. Long Islanders need him involved and engaged right through deadline. No one should be walking away from the negotiating table,” said Senator Martins.

The New, New York Middle Ground

When did bipartisanship become a bad thing?

Well, one group of radicals here in New York is so upset that Republicans and Democrats were working together that they launched an all out war to stop it. They actually targeted people who were working together for progress. What’s worse is that it worked, and that should scare the hell out of all Long Islanders.
