Senator Jack M. Martins was a guest reader in the Amazing Reading Race Through Space Read-In at the East Street School in Hicksville. Senator Martins and the students read a book and then discussed it. The program encourages reading by stressing that reading takes students on an amazing journey.

SENATOR MARTINS ATTENDS INDIAN NATIONAL FLAG HOISTING CEREMONY

Senatror Jack M. Martins recented attended the Indian National Flag Hoisiting Ceremony at the Vaishnav Temple Darshan Khand in New Hyde Park on the solemn occasion of the 65th Republic Day of India. The program was sponsored by Vaishnav Temple of New York and Indo-American Senior Citizen Center of New York. Senator Martins was honored and privileged to have taken part in such a proud ceremony.

SENATORS TO KING: DELAY COMMON CORE OR WE WILL

New York's Senate Thursday threatened to take legislative action to delay the implementation of a Common Core curriculum in schools that has stressed students, angered parents and anguished teachers.

"Do not force this body . . . to come up with a legislative solution," Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) warned Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. at Thursday's education committee meeting.

"Hit the delay button!" said Sen. George Latimer (D-Port Chester), slamming the table as he sat next to King. "Hit it!"

Earlier this week I was asked by one of the local newspapers to predict an outcome for the upcoming Super Bowl XLVIII matchup between the number one offense, Denver Broncos and the number one defense, Seattle Seahawks. The paper collects the opinions of various people and then does a side by side comparison to see who comes closest. It sounded like good fun and although I love watching football, I can’t imagine why they’d ask me. If I had any luck prognosticating that sort of thing, election years would be a whole lot easier.

SENATOR MARTINS WELCOMES HOME TAYLOR FROM CHINA

Demetrius Taylor is home again after playing professional basketball in China. The Elmont superstar played pro-ball in China and Shanghai in an experience Taylor described as "incredible and full of culture shock." Taylor was a special guest clinic coach at Senator Martins "Skills Challenge Basketball Camp" these past two weeks for children in the 3rd grade through 9th.

SENATE MAJORITY COALITION ISSUES REPORT ON REGULATORY REFORM

REPORT IDENTIFIES OVER 2,000 STATE RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT WARRANT REFORM OR REVIEW

The New York State Senate Majority Coalition issued a comprehensive report today that sheds light on New York State’s notoriously dense regulatory structure and identifies 2,219 specific rules, regulations and practices that put New York’s businesses at a competitive disadvantage.

The report is the product of surveys, meetings, community outreach and the input of over 100 business owners, advocacy organizations and individuals that participated in one of nine industry-specific public forums conducted throughout the State.

SENATOR MARTINS BASKETBALL CAMP A SLAM DUNK

The Senator Jack M. Martins and Senator Dean Skelos 1st Annual Basketball Camp was a smashing success. The first day, held on January 11 at the Dutch Broadway School, and the second day, held on January 12 at Elmont Memorial High School, brought out the community's youth to learn about the finer points of the game of basketball from qualified camp coaches. 

Among the skills taught were ball handling, shooting, positioning and footwork. 

Senator Martins and Senator Skelos partnered with Gateway Youth Outreach, Elmont West Civic, the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets. The camp was well attended and extremely well received as not only basketball skills but also participation, physical fitness, sportsmanship and teamwork were fostered.

SENATOR MARTINS CONTINUES KID PIX PROGRAM AT THE MINEOLA LIBRARY

Senator Jack M. Martins continued the valuable Kid Pix program at the Mineola Memorial Library. Partnering with Nassau County, Senator Martins offered free identification cards to children. The cards have important information on them. The program has been highly successful with parents and children taking advantage of the service. The Senator has brought the program to the communities in the Seventh Senate District.

SENATOR MARTINS ON THE GOVERNOR'S 2014 STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

Senator Jack M. Martins was recently in Albany for the start of the 2014 Legislative Session, which kicked off with the Governor's State of the State Address. After the address, the Senator stated:

“There is no question that over the last three years, we have made a big turnaround from years of dysfunction that have plagued New York State. Working together with the Governor, we ushered in a new era of fiscal responsibility by enacting a spending cap, a property tax cap, and passing three-consecutive, balanced budgets that were on-time because we put politics aside and worked together.

SENATOR MARTINS MEETS WITH STUDENT GOVERNMENT AT THE VINCENT SMITH SCHOOL

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited with the student government at the Vincent Smith School in Port Washington. The Senator met with the students to discuss his role as a legislator in state government and to answer their questions. Senator Martins and the students had an insightful discussion.

With the 2014 Legislative Session have just begun in Albany, Senator Martins still finds times to visit the schools in the Seventh Senate District to discuss important issues in New York State with the students.
