Senator Martins Secures Funding for Belmont Park Redevelopment Plan

Study seen as first step in revitalization of Racetrack

Senator Jack M. Martins sent a clear message when state leaders agreed on a new $132.6 billion budget plan that redevelopment of Belmont Park is a priority and the Senator secured $50,000 in funding to prove it.

As part of the state budget, Senator Martins, his Elmont partner in the Senate Dean Skelos and the Long Island Senate delegation were successful in allocating $50,000 in funding through the Empire State Development Corporation toward a plan for the redevelopment of Belmont Park. The goal of the plan is to explore options for the historic park in order to revitalize the area and boost the economy of the local communities by making the park a destination.

Bill Introduced By Senator Martins to Rename Roslyn Viaduct Passes Senate

A bill sponsored by Senator Jack M. Martins to rename the Roslyn Viaduct in honor of William Cullen Bryant has passed the Senate. The inspiration for the bill (S.6240) comes from the community's strong commitment to preserve its history.

Mr. Bryant, a prominent poet and civic leader in the 19th Century, is one of Roslyn’s most famous residents, having served as editor of the New York Evening Post for half a century. Mr. Bryant purchased a country house in Roslyn in 1843, which remained in his family until the 1970s.

Senator Martins Congratulates Swimming Champion Aaron Buissereth

State Senator Jack Martins congratulated Sewanaka Central High School District Swimming Champion Aaron Buissereth on his sensational victories in county meets throughout this swimming season this past week. Buissereth qualified for the Nassau County Championships and has posted some outstanding wins capturing 1st place six times in the 200 freestyle and winning the Metros Silver Championship for the 100 meter breastroke. Aaron is a member of the class of 2014 at Elmont Memorial High School where he is a high achieving student and involved in volunteer activities. "It was a great honor talking to Aaron and hearing about his outstanding acheivement. He trains hard and is an outstanding student.

Senator Martins Celebrates with Elmont at World Language Festival

State Senator Jack Martins joined with over 350 Elmont Memorial High School students this past weekend for their annual "World Language Festival." The evening celebrated foreign languages, food and culture in the Elmont Memorial High School gymnasium. Senator Martins was welcomed by Foreign Language teachers, students and community members in the very popular celebration. The evening features a great assortment of foods from around the world as well as music, entertainment and a fashion show. "I've come to the World Language Festival two years in a row and it never ceases to amaze me the great support and excitement it brings. The talent our young people have along with the deep appreciation of our diverse cultures makes this night so special.

Senator Martins to Host NYU Dental Van in Port Washington April 21

Senator Jack M. Martins will be hosting the New York University College of Dentistry "Smiling Faces, Going Places" Mobile Dental Care Program to provide oral health screenings to children and adults in the Seventh Senate District on Saturday, April 21 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Roberta Nixon Housing, 72 Harbor Homes, Port Washington, New York 11050.

The dental team will provide oral screenings, which include a general inspection of the mouth. No dental treatment will be rendered. At the conclusion of the screening, each patient will receive a "goodie bag" filled with a new toothbrush, toothpaste and oral healthcare information.

Senate Passes Tough Insurance Fraud Measures

The New York State Senate passed three bills to combat auto insurance fraud, which costs New Yorkers more than $1 billion a year, as well as legislation that would impose stronger criminal penalties for staging auto accidents. Recent cases of auto insurance fraud have uncovered massive crime rings, including doctors, lawyers and scam artists who staged accidents and used New York's no-fault insurance program as their own giant state-sponsored, ATM machine.

Senate Measure to Combat Crime by Expanding DNA Databank Signed Into Law

A measure passed by the New York State Senate to expand the DNA Databank to include all crimes has been signed into law. The measure is seen as a major tool to protect New Yorkers and bring justice to crime victims by requiring that DNA sample be collected from everyone convicted of a felony or penal law misdemeanor.

“The use of DNA assists our law enforcement in solving crimes and is a valuable tool in prosecuting criminals as we work to protect the safety of our citizens,” said Senator Jack M. Martins, who supported the measure.

The Big Picture

You might be familiar with the tale of the traveler who journeyed through Europe several hundred years ago. He came upon a village where there was a great deal of construction. He walked directly into the activity and asked a stone mason, “Excuse me sir, what’s going on here?” The worker replied curtly, “Can’t you see? I’m cutting stone.” The traveler approached another worker and asked the same question. The second replied, “Can’t you see? I’m preparing a foundation.” The traveler then approached a third laborer with the same question. The third mason paused and looking up at the edifice, replied, “Can’t you see? We’re building a cathedral.”

Martins Home Mortgage Safety Seminar Hosts Hundreds

Over 437 local residents packed the Elmont Public Library this past Saturday for Senator Jack Martins’ “Home Mortgage Safety Seminar.” The program, sponsored by Senator Martins, was a partnership with Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Governor Andrew Cuomo’s offices. Also participating in the seminar were Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Sovereign Bank, New York Communities for Change and Bank of America. Residents from Elmont, Franklin Square, Floral Park, South Floral Park, Westbury, New Cassell, Bellerose Terrace and North Valley Stream packed the Elmont Library.
