Senator Martins 3 on 3 Neighborhood Journal

Senator Jack Martins hosted a day of fun and exercise at the Dutch Broadway School. The annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament was open to students from 5th grade through college. This year there was also a soccer clinic. And high school and college kids were able to participate in 7-on-7 football games.

Senator Martins Seeks Resolution to Carle Place Train Station Noise

State Senator Jack M.Martins, State Assemblyman Tom McKevitt and Nassau County Legislator Richard Nicolello met with representatives of the Long Island Railroad recently to discuss a problem that has been facing some residents of Carle Place.

Those residents have asked elected officials for help in getting the railroad reduce the volume of announcements being made aboard trains at the Carle Place train station. Some residents in the area say the announcements are so loud, they can clearly hear them from their homes during off hours.

Senator Martins Congratulates New Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman-Elect

Senator Jack M. Martins recently congratulated Town of North Hemptead Councilwoman-elect Dina DiGiorgio of Port Washington. Dina was victorious during the November 8 election. She will be sworn in to serve the Town of North Hempstead's Sixth District in January. She has been active in a varity of organizations in the community include those in the elementary schools, Pride in Port and the Weber Social Committee as well as Port youth activities. Dina graduated from Fordham University School of Law and is a practicing attorney and co-founder of hte Long Island Mediation Group.

The Sixth District includes Baxter Estates, Flower Hill, Manhasset Isle, Manorhaven, Plandome Heights, Plandome Manor, Port Washington, Port Washington North and Sands Point.

Senator Martins Visits With Carle Place Seniors

Senator Jack M. Martins met with the Carle Place Seniors Citizens in Charles Fuschillo Park for a question and answer session. Senator Martins has been visiting with senior groups across the Seventh Senate District to answer questions and to speak about his priorities in the next legislative session, which begins in January.

“It’s always a please to meet with our residents. It’s important to know their priorities, which I can bring to Albany with me,” said Senator Martins. “We are blessed in the Seventh Senate District to have vibrant seniors groups and Carle Place in no exception. I want to thank them for having me.”

The Carle Place Senior Citizens meet each Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Senator Martins to Hold Toy Drive to Benefit the Ronald McDonald House

Senator Jack M. Martins is hoping to bring some cheer to families who are coping with the illness of a child by hosting a holiday toy drive. All toys donated will be given to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island to be distributed to children who are being treated for illness and their families.

Toys can be dropped off at Senator Martins District Office at 151 Herricks Road, Suite 202, in Garden City Park.

The Willets Road School, which is part of the East Williston School District, was recognized for the honor for working towards ensuring that every child attains success. Senator Martins Joins Elmont Dad's Club for Thanksgiving Food Drive

An incredible food drive effort by families and concerned members of the Elmont community, spearheaded by the Elmont Dad's Club, has resulted in hundreds of pounds of food being donated to needy families through Island Harvest. The food drive effort, this past Saturday, was a tremendous success and celebrated by community members and students gathered in the gymnasium of the Gotham Avenue School. State Senator Jack Martins contributed to the effort and packed food boxes with students from Covert Avenue, Clara Carlson, Gotham Avenue, Dutch Broadway, Stewart Manor and Alden Terrace Schools.

Senator Martins Supports Elmont Clothing and Toy Drive

Senator Jack Martins stopped by the Elmont clothing and toy drive this past Saturday and thanked students for working with the community and collecting needed clothing and toys for families in need during the holiday season. Senator Martins dropped off toys and contributed to the effort put together by Elmont students in the Class of 2012. Class President Candice Chatterpaul welcomed Senator Martins to the one-day drive and thanked him for his support of the effort. This is the second consecutive drive Senator Martins supported put on by the class. "The generosity of spirit that the young men and women of Elmont show us each and every day is truly inspirational.

Senator Martins Speaks With Members of the South Floral Park Civic Association

State Senator Jack Martins spoke to the South Floral Park Civic Association this past week where he discussed State and local issues on the minds of Village residents. The meeting was held at Village Hall where President Anthony Barbieri and Executive Board Members gave reports on Village Civic Matters.

Senator Martins called the gathering, “a great way to listen to what’s on the minds of community members. It's also a great opportunity to partner together and work for the greater community.” The well attended gathering had a question and answer format with local residents having the opportunity to ask Senator Martins questions and enter into a discussion with him.

Senator Martins Lights Up Elmont Fashion Show as Celebrity Guest

A night of glamour, glitz, music and art were showcased at Elmont Memorial High School this past week where the Elmont Music Department Fashion Show lit the night and raised funds for the music productions. Hundreds attended the gala event where casual wear, formal attire and music were showcased. State Senator Jack Martins was the celebrity guest and walked the fashion stage with Elmont Music Department Chair Eileen Kramer. Parents also got into the act and wore fashions as well and were led by Mrs. Byer, Mrs. Andrews and Mrs King. The designers and clothing were provided Adjmi Apparel and Selena Gomez!

Senators Martins and Skelos Talk Job Creation and Economic Development with President Obama's Economic Advisor

State Senator Jack Martins and State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos recently met with Citigroup Chairman and former AOL Time Warner Chair Dick Parsons to talk job creation and economic development. The luncheon took the form of a question and answer forum that discussed a wide range of economic issues that impact small business, downtowns and emerging local markets for communities throughout New York State and Long Island. Senator Martins also took the opportunity to bring three Elmont youth leaders to the luncheon gathering. Local residents Marvin Lee, Franklin Thomas and Tyrone St. Louis attended the luncheon where a question and answer period took place centering on the economy, job creation and emerging markets for New York and Long Island.

Senator Martins Honors Candidates at Gotham Avenue School Elections

State Senator Jack Martins visited the Gotham Avenue School today to participate in the annual student council elections. Officers from the 4th, 5th and 6th grades ran for election to serve their fellow classmates for the school year. Senator Martins was invited to the election assembly to talk with students about voting, participating in democracy and supporting their fellow classmates.

“In today’s Gotham Avenue School election, everyone on this stage is a winner. Each of these candidates is a shining example of the talent we have in our community. I am proud of you, your family is proud of you and all of Elmont is proud of your running for office,” said Senator Martins.

It's Pizza and Politics With the Manhasset High School Student Senate

Senator Jack M. Martins was at Manhasset High School recently for “Pizza and Politics” with the Student Senate. Pizza and Politics is an event Senator Martins started with student governments from high schools around the Seventh Senate District. Senator Martins and the students discuss various issues in government over a couple of slices of pizza, courtesy of the Senator.

“The students can ask me anything on their minds. Hopefully, I can provide some insight for them. But also, their questions help me in my job since it gives me the opportunity to discuss what is important to our young people who are our future leaders” said Senator Martins. “I want to thank Manhasset High School and the Student Senate for having me.”

There are weeks I feel like I should wear a football helmet to the office. That’s because whenever powerful, special interest groups feel I’ve somehow threatened their status quo, they launch attacks. This past week a number of local teachers’ unions targeted me as the “deciding vote” in favor of the tax cap and, in that vote, as having participated in an attack on our children’s education.

Senator Martins Receives Business Council's Highest Grade in 2011 Voters' Guide Report

The Business Council of New York State released its 2011 Voters’ Guide, which measures New York State legislators’ commitment to improving the state’s economic climate and performance by scoring their support for key business legislation during the 2011 session.

Senator Jack M. Martins received the council’s highest score.

“In this last legislative session, we had a priority to work with the Governor to make our state more friendly to business. We sent a clear message that New York State is open for business. The goals continue to be to encourage economic growth and create jobs. I want to thank the Business Council for recognizing our efforts,” Senator Martins said.

Congratulations to Floral Park-Bellerose School Student Council

The Floral Park-Bellerose School Student Council held their election and Senator Martins dropped by to congratulate all the participants. Senator Martins also spoke to the students, offering words of encouragement.

“Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Democratic process in the Floral Park-Bellerose School. It’s great that they have an interest in service to their school. I also want to once again thank the student council for its generous candy donation to the Sweets for Soldiers campaign. The students raised 600 pounds of candy. There are great things happening at the Floral Park-Bellerose School,” Senator Martins said.

Senator Martins Thanks Rushmore Avenue School for Sweet Donation

Senator Jack M. Martins sponsored a Sweets for Soldiers campaign to collect Halloween candy for our service men and women. Senator Martins’ office received donations thanks to the generosity of the schools in the Seventh Senate District. One of those schools that made a generous donation was the Rushmore Avenue School in Carle Place.

Dropping off the donation were Jen Sussman and Laurie Papa from the Rushmore Avenue School. “I can’t thank the Rushmore School enough for their generous donation. The students parted with their Halloween candy, showing their appreciation for our soldiers. They should be commended,” said Senator Martins. “The response from the community has been outstanding, from the teachers, students and parents. Thank you.”

Honoring Our Veterans on Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a day to honor all veterans for their service to our country. It is observed on Nocember 11, the aniversary of the Armistince that signified the end of World War I, which formally ended at the 11th hour of the11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Im 1938, Congress passed an act that made the 11th day of each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day." On October 8, 1938, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation, stating, "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNITED STATES MARINES CORPS

Senator Jack M. Martins extends birthday wishes to the United States Marines Corps, which is celebrating its 236th birthday on November 10. The Marines stopped by Senator Martins' District Office to pick up candy and toothbrushes that were generously donated by some of the schools in the Seventh Senate District. Some of the students also wrote touching letter to the soldiers, which were also given to the Marines.
