Senator Martins Honors Intel Semi-Finalist From Manhasset

Senator Jack M. Martins recently honored Jun Kit “Timothy” He when the Senator visited Manhasset High School. Tim was one of the semi-finalists in the 70th Intel Science Talent Search competition.

Tim’s project, “Gene Expression Profiling and EKG: The Development of a Novel Prognostic Mechanism for Cardiac Allograft Rejection,” addressed heart transplant recipients. His project used gene expression levels in white blood cells and EKG variables to create an equation that can predict rejection without the biopsy.

Senator Martins Visits Manhasset High School

Senator Jack M. Martins continued his tour of schools around the 7th Senate District at Manhasset High School where he met with Manhasset School Superintendent Charles Cardillo, Manhasset Board of Education President Cindy Cardinal and board members Patricia Aitken, Regina Rule and Craig Anderson.

Senator Martins discussed with Superintendent Cardillo and the board members such issues that will affect school districts such as the Governor’s budget and the proposed cuts in state aid to Long Island schools as well as the tax cap.

Senator Martins Participates in Cultural Studies Week at the Manorhaven School

Senator Jack M. Martins last week visited the Manorhaven School in Port Washington for Cultural Studies Week. The school library was transformed into the country of Ireland as the students had an opportunity to learn about the Irish culture. Senator Martins met with Port Washington School Superintendent Dr. Geoff Gordon and Manorhaven School Principal Bonni Cohen.

Students learned about Irish customs and traditions. Each student received a castle stamp to represent their “visit” to Ireland, where the students learned from 30 boards that displayed educational information about the country.

Senator Martins Gets Commitment From NYRA on Belmont Issue

Senator Jack M. Martins received a commitment this week at the New York State Senate hearing on Racing and Wagering, for revitalization and investment at Belmont Racetrack from NYRA officials. The commitment was seen as “a very positive step forward” towards economic development and revitalization in the south lot of the Belmont property and improvements at the aging Belmont facility. Senator Martins received the commitment of investment of VLT (Video Lottery Terminal) revenues, generated at Aqueduct, from NYRA President Charles Hayward.

Senator Martins Celebrates Lunar New Year at Herricks High School

Senator Jack M. Martins joined close to 1,000 members of the Herricks community Saturday at the 10th anniversary of the Herricks Lunar New Year Celebration hosted by the Asian American Cultural Club and the Chinese American Association of North Hempstead.

The gathering featured food, entertainment, singing, wushu, arts and crafts, Chinese Checker tournaments and the Lion Dance. Senator Martins was invited to give opening remarks during the program and wished the community “Gong Xi, Gong Xi” or “Happy New Year!”

Senator Martins Meets With St. John's Students From the 7th Senate District

State Senator Jack Martins met with college students attending St. Johns University from Franklin Square, Manhasset, Elmont, Great Neck, Mineola, Floral Park and Port Washington this past week at the State Capitol. The college students met with Martins to discuss college loan programs and education issues. The discussion centered around how tuition assitance, college loan programs and higher education access can be improved. Senator Martins hosted the group in his office and took questions about the proposed State budget and its impact on TAP, HEOP, and other assorted college aids. "It was an honor to meet with college students from throughout the 7th Senate district. I'm glad I was able to meet with them and have a discussion on the challenges we face as a state and community.

Senator Martins Discusses Finances With School Superintendents

State Senator Jack Martins met with school superintendents from throughout the northwest quadrant of the 7th Senate district to discuss state aid, mandate relief and canceled grant funding. The meeting was chaired by Floral Park Bellerose School District Superintendent Dr. Lynn Pombonyo. Among the local school superintendents at the meeting included Al Harper of Elmont, Warren Meierdiercks of Sewanhaka, Patrick Manley of Franklin Square, Dr. Tom Dolan of Great Neck South, Robert Katulak of New Hyde Park-Garden City Park, Charles Cardillo of Manhasset, Dr. Brenner of Roslyn, Dr. John Bierwirth of Herricks, Dr. Lorna Lewis of East Williston and many more were in attendance.

Senator Martins Attends Inter-School PTA Celebration in Elmont

State Senator Jack Martins was back in Elmont to speak to over 400 Elmont community members and PTA leaders at the Covert Avenue School on the occasion of Elmont Inter-School PTA’s 114th anniversary. Senator Martins congratulated the PTA and thanked community volunteers for their “hard work and sacrifice in making Elmont’s schools a success.”

Senator Martins was invited to give remarks at the program and participate in the evening by the Inter-School PTA and Elmont School District. “Elmont’s schools and PTA are a partnership that makes things happen in the Elmont community,” said Senator Jack Martins noting, “the people gathered in this room are a vital key to the future success of our young people and schools in Elmont.”

Public Hearing: Senate Hearing on Mandate Relief and Real Property Tax Caps

Senator Jack M. Martins, chair of the Standing Committee on Local Government, and Senator John Flanagan, chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Education, will be co-sponsoring a hearing on mandate relief. “The True Path to Reducing New York’s Real Property Tax Burden: Mandate Relief and Tax Caps” will focus on the issues of Real Property Tax Reductions, Mandate Relief, and how the State of New York can accomplish both. The two Committees will be soliciting testimony on what policies and mechanisms can be used to accomplish these goals, as well as what impacts such policies and mechanisms will have upon taxpayers, local governments, school districts, labor, businesses and jobs.

Senator Martins Addresses Chaminade High School Social Studies Club

Senator Jack M. Martins returned to his alma mater on Thursday as he spoke to the Chaminade High School Social Studies Club. Senator Martins discussed the issues with about 250 members of the club in the auditorium as he continued his tour of schools in the 7th Senate District.

Senator Martins spoke about the fiscal problems facing New York State and how they affect local communities in the 7th Senate District. The Senator told the students of the $10 billion shortfall in the state’s budget and Governor Cuomo’s proposed cuts to close it. Senator Martins said he will be fighting to make sure the cuts will not be falling disproportionately on schools in the 7th Senate District.

Senator Martins Discusses Healthcare With Student Health Center Advocates

State Senator Jack M. Martins met with students from throughout the 7th Senate District, including Elmont, Hempstead, Bellerose Terrace, Westbury, South Floral Park and New Cassell, to discuss school-based health centers. The group of high school seniors met with Senator Martins to advocate for preventative and basic health care coverage for young people who do not have health care coverage. Winthrop University Hospital currently funds the program that provides primary care services to young people.

Senator Martins Speaks at Program Dedication Ceremony For Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center

State Senator Jack Martins offered comments and program insight at a dedication program at the Nassau County Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center this past Sunday, Feb. 6. The program, “These are My People,” discussed the selfless acts of Aristedes de Sousa Mendes during World War II. Mendes spearheaded a visa operation which resulted in the saving of 30,000 refugees from Nazi oppression during the invasion of France during World War II.

The event featured Senator Martins, Portugese Ambassador Jao Maria Cabral, Congressman Steve Israel, Rabbi Jeffrey Clopper, Yad Vashem Director of the Righteous Dr. Mordechai Paldiel and Luis Pires of Luso-Americano Newspaper.

From the Desk of Senator Martins

It’s been an historic week in Albany from the perspective that our state government is at last bringing tax relief to our residents. I was pleased to have voted along with my colleagues on a 2 percent tax cap to be imposed on local government. This will help to ensure that our residents will not be saddled with heavy tax increases that will drive them from their homes. The taxpayers have clearly spoken and we are listening.

The tax cap has been passed by the Senate and is supported by Governor Cuomo. We now need the Assembly to pass this legislation to begin the process of easing the tax burden on all New Yorkers.
