Senate Passes Bill to Crack Down on Auto Insurance Fraud

The New York State Senate passed a bill that would prevent insurance fraud by making it a felony to intentionally cause a vehicle collision. The legislation, sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R-C-I, Oneonta), targets criminals who capitalize on vulnerable motorists in attempts to profit from insurance claims.

“Criminals trying to rip off the system by staging auto accidents are also putting innocent lives in jeopardy,” Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said. “This bill would crack down on the practice by creating tough new criminal penalties for staging car accidents, and it would have the added benefits of reducing fraud, lowering insurance costs and making our streets safer.”

Senator Martins Honors Port Washington Eagle Scouts

Senator Jack M. Martins was proud to attend the Eagle Scout of Honor ceremony in honor of Gregory K. Michel and Daniel R. Michel of Troop 241 in Port Washington and present the troop’s two newest Eagle Scouts with Senate Resolutions.

The twin brothers received the highest honor that a scout can achieve, the rank of Eagle Scout. On their trail to the Eagle Scout honors, Gregory earned 27 Merit Badges and Daniel earned 23.

Senator Martins Attends Albertson Fire Company Annual Dinner

Senator Jack M. Martins attended the Albertson Fire Company's annual dinner, where he sworn in the officers of the fire company. He also presented Senate Resolutions to two 50-year members of the fire company, Dennis A. Craine and Peter F. Brala.

Dennis joined the Albertson Fire Company on October 10, 1960 and has served in numerous roles including chief. Peter joined the company on Janaury 9, 1961 and also served the company as chief.

Senator Martins Welcomes American Legion Members to the State Capitol

Senator Jack M. Martins continued his listening tour by meeting with local veterans with Nassau County's American Legion in his office at the State Capitol. The listening tour has hosted hundreds of constituents from all areas of his district in an effort to hear the concerns and challenges that people face in these challenging economic times for the state and country. Members of the Nassau County American Legion, led by former Elmont American Legion Commander Bill Ost met with Senator Martins and discussed pending veteran's legislation being reviewed in the State Senate. "Every time I meet with our local Veterans they inspire me," said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Huddles With School Leaders to Talk About the Budget, Mandate Relief

Senator Jack M. Martins met with school board leaders from throughout the 7th Senate District in Albany to strategize about state aid to schools and mandate relief. Trustees from Franklin Square, Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Sewanhaka, East Williston, North Shore and other districts met with Martins and briefed him on school issues and concerns. The discussion with local education leaders was “positive, proactive and a frank exchange between public education advocates and the Senate,” said Senator Martins. "It’s great to know that I have real partners in education that not only care about our young people, but understand that people are truly hurting economically in our communities.”

Senator Martins Tours Port Washington, Meets With Community Leaders

Senator Jack M. Martins, the chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Local Government, recently spent a Friday in Port Washington meeting with community leaders and listening to their concerns.

Senator Martins started the day by meeting with Village of Port Washington North Mayor Robert Weitzner. Among the topics discussed was the Port Washington North Baywalk Project, which consists of 1.7 acres of waterfront property. The village’s goal is to transform the area into an active waterfront park so that the area becomes a destination for residents.

Phase I has been completed on the project.

The New York State Senate passed its budget resolution - - a fiscally sound plan that reduces spending, rejects tax increases and makes responsible investments in New York’s future.

The Senate budget largely mirrors the priorities outlined in Governor Cuomo’s Executive Budget and will serve as a real roadmap to the enactment of a responsible, on-time budget.

Senator Jack M. Martins attended the Portuguese Soccer Club’s 75th anniversary gala on Saturday evening, March 12 at the Mineola Portuguese Center. The Mineola Portuguese Soccer Club has a long tradition of soccer excellence in the Portuguese community.

The club, which plays in the Long Island Football League’s East Division, has produced numerous players throughout the years who have enjoyed playing soccer while carving out successful careers such asNew England Revolution player Gary Flood, New York Red Bulls star Carlos Mendes and the club’s current president, Marco Dafonte.

I often say that many elected officials in Albany look at the state from 30,000 feet. They see the quilt pattern of the various terrains, they see communities, but they don't see people. Much the same way, many of these same elected officials oftentimes make decisions without having an understanding as to how the decisions will impact people directly. I don't believe that there is any sinsiter motive, just a lack of perspective and understanding.

Senator Jack M. Martins wants to remind residents that those wishing to help the victims of the Earthquake and Tsuami in Japan can do so through the American Red Cross.
