SENATOR MARTINS: STATE BUDGET SHOULD END THE GEA THIS YEAR

Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) and his colleagues in the Senate Majority are calling for the complete abolishment of the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) in this year’s state budget.

The GEA was first imposed on New York schools in 2010, before Senator Martins was a member of the Senate, by former Governor David Paterson and the New York City Democrats who controlled the Senate and Assembly at the time. Senator Martins has continually opposed the GEA because it created severe cuts to the bottom lines for public schools.

End the GEA!

Join Senator Martins in fighting to restore aid to our schools which was cut by the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA).

The GEA was created in 2010 by the New York City Democrats who controlled all of state government at the time. It was a multi-billion dollar education aid cut which hurt students and schools, as well as raised the burden on already overtaxed residents.

Since taking office in 2011, Senator Martins has made eliminating the GEA a priority.  Progress has been made in repealing it, but now we need to get rid of it once and for all.

Thinking Is Hard Work

Just mention a tax break and New Yorkers’ eyes light up with sheer joy. You can’t blame us. We pay some of the highest property and personal income taxes in the country. That’s why Governor Cuomo’s most recent proposal for a nearly $1.7 billion tax credit known as a “circuit breaker” was initially met with such enthusiasm. I was initially enthusiastic about it too, but having examined it more closely, I’m afraid I have to throw a bit of cold water on what isn’t really a well-thought out plan.

SENATOR MARTINS STATEMENT ON NASSAU OTB ENDING FORTUNOFF CASINO PROPOSAL

“Earlier today, Nassau OTB officially abandoned its plan to put a VLT facility at the former Fortunoff’s Store in Westbury.

This is welcome news for all of us who have spent the last several weeks telling OTB that a VLT facility does not belong at this site. It is too close to our homes, our schools, and it would have a negative impact on the community.

I thank OTB for finally listening to the thousands of residents, community leaders, and elected officials who voiced their concerns and abandoning its plan.”
