SENATOR MARTINS: FINAL STATE BUDGET AGREEMENT WILL INCLUDE OVER $517 MILLION FOR LOCAL HIGHWAY REPAIRS

Senator Jack Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that the final state budget agreement will include over $517 million in state aid for local governments to repair and maintain their roads. The funding includes an additional $40 million in aid over last year’s total to help local governments repair the significant road damage caused by this winter’s harsher than normal weather. Senator Martins, Chairman of the Senate’s Local Government Committee, fought for the aid increase to be included in this year’s state budget.

Join the Fight Against Welfare for Politicians

Wealthy special-interest groups from New York City and Washington, D.C. want to hijack your taxes and create a taxpayer-financed state election system to the tune of more than $200 million per year. And you can bet it will cost us a lot more than that.

Instead of lowering property taxes, investing in our schools or creating jobs we desperately need, they want you – the taxpayer – to foot the bill for their outrageously expensive political campaigns.

Worse, they’re demanding the same system that’s spawned nothing but scandal and corruption in New York City. It’s an affront to our common sense.

I refuse to support using your tax dollars to pay for any political campaign.

From the Desk of Senator Jack M. Martins

Mr. Mineola

I wanted to write something poetic here. My intention was to memorialize a good friend with words that would strengthen those of us who loved him while capturing his extraordinary spirit for those who didn’t know him. But I got stuck, starting and stopping a good half a dozen times as no words seemed to be doing my sentiments justice. Then, as providence would have it, I came across a quote from the American essayist, E.B. White, who wrote “To achieve style, begin by affecting none.”

SENATE PASSES MANDATORY DWI TESTING AFTER SERIOUS ACCIDENTS

Chemical Tests Would Be Required If Injury or Death Occurs

The New York State Senate passed legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola), that would help convict dangerous drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The legislation requires testing drivers suspected of being under the influence when an accident occurs and results in serious injury or death.

“This measure is another step in holding those who choose to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol accountable for putting innocent lives at risk,” Senator Martins said. “This will provide law enforcement with more effective means to make our roads safer and save lives.”

SENATOR MARTINS PASSES BILL PROTECTING CHILDREN LEFT UNATTENDED IN MOTOR VEHICLES

The State Senate has overwhelmingly passed legislation sponsored by Senator Jack Martins (R-Mineola) that makes it unlawful to leave a child under 8-year-old unattended in a motor vehicle.

During the warm summer months, dangerous conditions can arise in standing or parked motor vehicles as trapped heat causes the temperature inside to rise dramatically. Between 1998 and 2004, 230 children have died of hyperthermia from being left in cars. In 2005, by mid-summer, 19 deaths were recorded as a result of hyperthermia.

Senator Martins’ bill requires that children remaining in a parked or standing car be accompanied by a someone who is at least twelve years old.

From the Desk of Senator Jack M. Martins: It’s the Same Old Song

Can you hear it? Listen closely and you’ll recognize the harmony of thousands of voices woefully singing, “It’s the Same Old Song” by the Four Tops. They’re parents from Buffalo to Montauk singing because the New York City-led state assembly voted to return three of the four Board of Regents members to their positions this past week. And the fourth one was only replaced because he resigned. That just about locks him in as the smartest member as far as I’m concerned, because he realized he was in over his head.

SENATOR MARTINS INFORMS RESIDENTS HOW TO SEARCH FOR UNCLAIMED FUNDS

Senator Jack Martins (R-Mineola) is informing residents how they can find out if they are entitled to any of the $12 billion in New York State unclaimed funds.

Unclaimed funds are monies such as un-cashed checks, old bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, and stocks and dividends that people have left dormant or forgotten about. State law requires banks, utilities, and many other businesses and companies to turn over these inactive accounts to the State Comptroller’s Office, which holds the funds in trust until they can be reclaimed by their rightful owner.
