FROM THE DESK OF SENATOR JACK M. MARTINS

If you mess up, fess up

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard about the city of Detroit filing for bankruptcy. It’s frightening to think that what was once one of the nation’s primary economic engines cannot pay its day-to-day bills. Despite sensationalist commentary from both sides of the political spectrum, I can assure you there’s really no single reason this happened. There are many causes and even more opinions, but one thing is for sure: Detroit borrowed and spent extravagantly for many years and dug itself right into a hole. Sadly, no one on the state level in Michigan intervened to get them back on track.

Weeding our Political Garden

Admittedly, I do not have a green thumb. If our home is verdant it’s entirely by my wife’s efforts but I do recall once reading some gardening advice that seemed useful: you can’t get rid of weeds by simply pulling them out. You must plant something in their place to prevent their return.

NASSAU: NY COSMOS COULD NET MILLIONS - FROM NEWSDAY

From Newsday - July 24, 2013

By Richard Brodsky

The return of the New York Cosmos soccer team to Long Island next month could generate up to $19 million in new annual revenue for restaurants, hotels, retail stores and other businesses, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos said Tuesday.

The Cosmos, a prominent professional team in the 1970s and 1980s, will play 14 home games at Hofstra's 15,000-seat James M. Shuart Stadium beginning Aug. 3.

The games would generate $18.9 million in annual economic activity if the team attracts capacity crowds to the stadium, Maragos said in a report. That figure would drop to $9.4 million if the stadium were half filled, and $4.7 million at 25 percent capacity.

Peace and Quiet

During these summer months, as we spend so much time outdoors with family and friends, it’s easy to see why airplane noise has been such a big concern for many of us. Not that we don't hear the planes when we're in our homes. We do, but being outside brings the problem into focus. I guess that’s the nature of living next to three major airports. But it was never this bad, never this loud.
