One Limb For Life

I often marvel at the resiliency of the human spirit. More often than not it’s reflected in a person’s grace in dealing with adversity, accepting that which cannot be changed, and persevering despite the challenge. This resiliency is vibrantly displayed in those who, through a condition at birth or misfortune later in life, rely on prosthetics to go about what we would otherwise consider routine. For them, access to a prosthetic limb is their link to the pursuit of a normal, everyday life and modern healthcare has come a long way in that regard. That’s why what I’m about to share is so implausible, so unreasonable, that you’ll undoubtedly be as offended as I was to hear it.

Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to increase penalties for drivers who operate a vehicle without a driver’s license. The legislation would address an inequity in current law which people who drive with a suspended license face a far stronger penalty than someone who drives with no license at all. SENATOR MARTINS STATEMENT ON ASSEMBLY PASSAGE OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING LEGISLATION

“I am pleased that my colleagues in the Assembly have finally joined the Senate in acting on legislation to protect people from human trafficking.

As I have long said, reforms like tougher penalties for human trafficking, measures to ensure pay equity for women, and stronger protections for victims of domestic violence and discrimination should not be tied together. Each of the measures should be considered individually, on their own merits, not held hostage for political purposes. I am hopeful that the Assembly’s action today means that they are joining us in finally putting women first.

One Oar in the Water

I used to chuckle when an old friend of mine would say someone had “just one oar in the water.” She was usually describing somebody who was pursuing this or that bad idea and who just didn’t see things clearly. That’s why it’s the perfect title for this week’s message.
