Seward Pledges Support For Student Resolution

HERKIMER, 03/09/15 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) met recently with Herkimer High School Freshman Class President Nicholaus Stallman to discuss education.

“In short order the state senate will adopt its own budget resolution for fiscal year 2015-16, with an eye toward completing work on the state budget by the April 1 deadline,” said Senator Seward.  “My visit with Nicholaus was timely and helped illustrate just how important the state budget is for our students and their future.”

Seward Joins Frankfort-Schuyler For Youth Art Month

FRANKFORT, 03/06/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) today joined art students at Frankfort-Schuyler Central School to announce that the state senate recently approved a special legislative resolution he sponsored calling on the governor to proclaim March 2015 as Youth Art Month in the State of New York.

“Art education is one of the many ways our students are able to express themselves and excel,” said Senator Seward. “Achievement in art can be linked to success in a number of other subject areas and the creative skills demonstrated are highly valued in business and in life.”

Seward Calls For NY-SAFE Act Amendments

ALBANY, 03/02/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) today announced the introduction of a legislative package to amend and repeal portions of  the NY-SAFE Act.  Two years has passed since the enactment of the governor’s NY-SAFE Act, yet there is no tangible evidence that the law has increased safety.

Keep Sex Offenders Away From Their Victims & Schools

ONEONTA, 02/19/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I- Oneonta) today announced that he has introduced legislation (S.2609) to prohibit sex offenders from residing near their victims or near any school.

“We must do all we can to safeguard children and victims from sexual offenders,” said Senator Seward.  “My legislation bars the most serious predators from residing near their victims or near a school and will close an existing loophole in addition to providing a needed layer of protection.”

Senate Call To End GEA Intensifies

ALBANY, 02/10/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I- Oneonta) today announced that the Senate Majority conference is joining his fight to eliminate the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) which has devastated public schools.

Schoharie County Youth Bureau Meets With Senator Seward

ALBANY, 02/04/15 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) recently presented David Wilhelm of Kerhonkson with a New York State Legislative Resolution honoring his heroic rescue of eight passengers trapped in a van following a motor vehicle accident.

Seward Introduces Bill To End GEA

ONEONTA, 01/30/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I- Oneonta) today announced that he has introduced legislation (S.2643) to eliminate the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) which has cost New York school districts millions of dollars.

“I voted against the GEA when it passed in 2009 and have been working to erase this curse on our local schools ever since,” said Senator Seward.  “This hurtful policy was simply a cash-grab by the state that left schools reeling and trying to recover ever since.  It needs to end now.”

Cortlandville FD Names Seward Honorary Member

CORTLANDVILLE, 01/23/15 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) was honored recently by the Cortlandville Fire Department.  At the department’s 2015 Inspection Dinner, Senator Seward was named an honorary member for his longstanding and continued support of the first responders.

“I was tremendously humbled to receive such a meaningful honor from the Cortlandville Fire Department,” said Senator Seward.  “The men and women who fearlessly respond to when called and put their lives on the line to protect others are true heroes.  I have always done all I can to help make their job safer and easier and am truly appreciative of this great tribute.”

Seward Advocacy Prompts New Plan For Route 80 Project

ONEONTA, 01/16/15 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on the State Department of Transportation’s (DOT) scaled-down and reconfigured design plan for road repairs along a section of State Route 80 in Otsego County: 

“After strongly advocating for my constituent’s concerns, I am extremely pleased that the Department of Transportation (DOT) listened to property owners and incorporated their suggestions into a revised and reduced blueprint for work along Route 80.  We now have a project that meets the safety needs of the motoring public, protects the environmental health of Otsego Lake, and will have no negative impact on homeowners.”

Statement on Hydraulic Fracturing Ban

ONEONTA, 12/17/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on the release of a health study from the Department of Health relating to high volume hydraulic fracturing: 

“I have consistently said that any decision concerning hydraulic fracturing in New York State must be based on science and, like many, have awaited the release of the study from the Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Conservation related to drilling.  Today the governor moved to ban hydraulic fracturing in New York, and while many disagree and litigation is likely, in light of the governor’s decision, we need to move on to develop a robust economic development strategy that capitalizes on our other resources.”

New Law Provides Consumer Protection For Life Insurance Policyholders

ONEONTA, 11/25/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I- Oneonta) today announced a major consumer protection measure for life insurance policyholders he sponsored has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo.  

Senator Seward’s bill (S.7320/A.9915) amends the Life Insurance Company Guaranty Corporation of New York (LICGCNY) Act to protect New York policyholders in the event of an insurance company’s bankruptcy.
