Extreme Makeover New York

ONEONTA, 01/07/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) today outlined his legislative agenda for the 2011 session of the New York State Senate.  Seward’s plan, dubbed “Extreme Makeover: New York” focuses on smart budget cuts, property tax relief, economic development and government reform.  

“New York is ready for a complete overhaul.  My ‘Extreme Makeover: New York’ initiative includes calculated cost cutting that will provide our state with financial stability, tax relief that will help people with their own bottom line, business stimulating actions aimed at jumpstarting job growth and government reforms to restore public confidence in Albany.

Senator Seward Applauds State of State Address

ALBANY, 01/05/11 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on Governor Cuomo’s State of the State address:

“The governor’s state of the state message was a slam dunk.  Styled more like an upbeat high school pep rally than a monotonous political speech, he hit on all the right themes and seemed to energize legislators and all New Yorkers on hand.

“The message of fiscal responsibility rang through and is one I have been promoting for some time.  The state has been spending too much, and needs to cut back through the use of a hard spending cap, Medicaid reform, and state agency consolidations.

Senator Seward Sworn In For New Term

ONEONTA, 01/01/11 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) took the oath of office today for another term at the Otsego County Courthouse in Cooperstown. 

Following the swearing-in ceremony, Seward addressed the standing room only crowd, vowing to attack the challenges facing New York head-on: 

“The landscape in Albany is changing.  There will be new players, including a new governor, and a new senate majority which I am proud to be part of.  I am also hopeful that there will be a renewed spirit of cooperation with an eye toward positive accomplishments that will benefit our entire state.

Seward Renews Call For Open Review Of OWB Regs

ONEONTA, 12/20/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) is again calling on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to conduct a full, open review of proposed outdoor wood boiler (OWB) regulations.

“Energy costs are rising on a daily basis and upstate homeowners and farmers struggling to make ends meet are constantly searching for economical and environmentally sound methods to keep expenses in check,” said Senator Seward.  “I appreciate the Department of Environmental Conservation’s efforts in revising outdoor wood boiler regulations but local concerns have not been adequately addressed.”

Help Rogers Continue Life Enriching Activities

Seward Calls On NYSDOT To Expedite Cortland County Road Work

CORTLAND, 12/01/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) is calling on the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to complete reconstruction work of the route 281 and 13 corridor in the Town of Cortlandville on the original timetable.

“Delaying reconstruction of this important thoroughfare restricts traffic flow and threatens the safety of the traveling public,” said Senator Seward.  “The route 281 and 13 corridor is growing and further delays of this project will stifle desired development and inconvenience local business owners.”

DOT Rest Stop Closures Threaten Public Safety

WORCESTER, 11/17/10 – Gathered at a rest area marked for closure, state Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta), Assemblyman Marc Butler (R/C/I-Newport) and Assemblyman Pete Lopez (R/C/I-Schoharie) announced today their opposition to a recent NYSDOT decision to shut down six highway rest areas.

“Weakening one of the few protective measures available to drivers on our roadways leaves all motorists, and in particular, truck drivers at risk,” said Senator Seward.  “While I understand the need to cut back in these tough fiscal times, I believe there are other areas that should be considered first.”

Seward Ensures Timely Completion Of Otsego County Bridge Project

ONEONTA, 09/30/10 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) announced today that replacement of an Otsego County bridge has been expedited due to recent discussions with the local utility.

“A reconstructed Brooker Hollow Road bridge will provide safe passage to school students, families and individuals who rely on the span on a daily basis,” said Senator Seward.  “Completing the job as quickly as possible will alleviate any long term inconvenience.”

Safety Review of Popular Greene County Hiking Trail Needed

ONEONTA, 07/30/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) recently called on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to review safety measures at the Devil’s Kitchen hiking area in the Town of Hunter. 

“Two fatal hiking accidents this year at Devil’s Kitchen have prompted concerns that must be evaluated,” said Senator Seward.  “The Department of Environmental Conservation should take steps to assess the trail’s safety and to ensure proper warnings are present.”
