CWC Grants Will Help Rebuild Main Streets

ONEONTA, 09/13/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commended the Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) for approving a special grant program for small businesses devastated by recent storms and flooding.

“As I toured communities ravaged by Tropical Storms Irene and Lee and met with business owners who have lost their livelihoods, each indicated the desire to rebuild but many lacked the means,” said Senator Seward.  “One of my first calls was to the Catskill Watershed Corporation seeking their assistance and I am pleased to learn of their swift and generous response.”

Insurance MCC Dispatched To Greene & Schoharie Counties

ONEONTA, 09/11/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced the New York State Insurance Department Mobile Command Center (MCC) will be in Greene County and Schoharie County to assist residents and business owners with questions they may have following recent storms and flooding.

“While touring storm damaged towns many of those who have lost everything expressed the need for some help in contacting their insurance companies,” said Senator Seward. “Financial Services Superintendent Benjamin Lawsky joined me in meeting with many storm victims and I want to thank him for his quick response to their needs by dispatching the mobile command center.”

"New York Remembers" Exhibitions Commemorate Tenth Anniversary Of September 11th

ONEONTA, 09/09/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today reminded New Yorkers that thirty “New York Remembers” exhibitions are now open statewide marking the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 

“A decade has passed since the cowardly 9/11 attacks on America changed our lives forever,” said Senator Seward.  “Each and every community across our state felt the impact of that horrific day and in the days following the attacks, leaned on one another for support and compassion. I applaud Governor Cuomo for involving locations statewide in this tenth anniversary memorial – we shall never forget.”

Area Counties Included In Federal Disaster Declaration

ONEONTA, 09/05/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today reminded residents and businesses in eligible counties to apply for federal disaster assistance. “Families and businesses in communities devastated by Irene are determined to rebuild and the federal disaster declaration is a helpful step in the ongoing recovery.  I encourage those who have suffered damage to apply with FEMA as soon as possible to begin the assistance process,” said Senator Seward.

Those who have suffered damage are able to register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362).  Registration forms and additional information can be found online at www.disasterassistance.gov.

Permit Suspension Prudent Course Of Action

ONEONTA, 09/01/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commended the decision to suspend certain permit requirements as homeowers and municipal workers rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Irene.

"As property owners work to safely return to their homes and local officials perform needed emergency repairs there is no time to wade through bureaucratic red tape,” said Senator Seward.  “Putting certain permitting requirements on hold removes a roadblock to recovery and allows vital work to take place immediately.”

Seward Views Storm Damage

PRATTSVILLE, 08/31/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined Governor Andrew Cuomo, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate for a tour of flood ravaged portions of upstate New York.

Seward Appeals To Governor For Additional Disaster Relief

Seward Trumpets Musical Milestone

COOPERSTOWN, 08/25/11 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) recently presented a special legislative resolution from the state senate to the Cooperstown Community Band commemorating its 150th anniversary season.

The Cooperstown Community Band got its start in 1862 during the Civil War when 13 men left Cooperstown to serve as Doubleday’s Band in New York 66th Regiment.   Today, the band is made up of approximately 45 volunteer musicians from communities throughout Otsego County and neighboring counties ranging in age from 9 to 89.

Safety Review Of Cairo-Durham School Entrance Needed

ONEONTA, 08/18/11 – Following an appeal from State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) the NYS Department of Transportation will review safety measures on Route 145 at the entrance of Cairo-Durham Middle & High School where the recent death of a student has sparked concern.

Seward Bill Favored By Cortland County Sportsmen Signed Into Law

ALBANY, 08/04/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) announced today that legislation allowing Cortland County sportsmen and women to use a rifle while hunting deer or bear has been signed into law.

“This is common sense legislation that mirrors regulations already in effect in neighboring counties allowing the use of rifles while hunting big game,” said Senator Seward.  “More importantly, Cortland County sportsmen and women, who collectively have an impeccable safety record, strongly support the change.”

Seward Joins In Historic Announcement For Remington Arms & Ilion

ILION, 07/27/11 - State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I - Oneonta) today joined the Village of Ilion and Remington Arms, LLC in announcing that Remington Arms is now a full requirements retail electric customer of the Village of Ilion municipal electric system. Earlier this year the village received an allocation of additional hydropower from the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to support this provision of electric service and Remington Arms' recent project expansion and job retention in Ilion.

Seward Co-sponsors "Protect Our Children Act"

ALBANY, 07/21/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined senate colleagues in introducing legislation that would make sweeping, comprehensive changes to the state’s child protection laws.  The “Protect Our Children Act” (S.5862) includes provisions related to the reporting of missing children, will shield children from cruel and repeated abuse and increases penalties for child predators.

The bill comes in the wake of Caylee Anthony’s tragic murder case and the murder of eight-year-old Leiby Kletzky in Brooklyn, and includes more than two dozen provisions aimed at strengthening New York State laws.

Expanded Transition Period Needed For Prison Closures

ONEONTA, 07/20/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) today joined with several legislative colleagues in calling on Governor Cuomo to extend the transition period for employees affected by pending prison closures.

“Thousands of employees and their families are dealing with life altering decisions as a result of the governor’s prison closures,” said Senator Seward.  “The very least the state can provide is ample transition time for these dedicated workers who are about to have their lives uprooted through no fault of their own.”

Otselic Valley School Name Change Official

ALBANY, 07/20/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) announced today that legislation formally changing the name of Georgetown-South Otselic School District to the Otselic Valley Central School District at Georgetown-South Otselic has been signed into law.

“This legislation formalizes the legal name of the Otselic Valley Central School District at Georgetown-South Otselic and comes at the request of the school,” said Senator Seward.  “The change will allow the district to employ the commonly used  name when filing reports, applying for grants or entering into contracts.”
