Release State Funds - Get Construction Jobs Moving

ONEONTA, 04/08/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) says the late state budget is now jeopardizing thousands of jobs and putting public safety at risk.

“The lack of urgency shown by some in Albany to set to work on a state budget is now sending individuals to the unemployment line,” said Senator Seward.  “We need to start public conference committees immediately and complete a state budget to avoid a total state shut down.”

Along with pressing for ramped up budget work, Senator Seward is also calling on the governor to reverse his recent decision to suspend payments for ongoing state-funded capital construction projects until a new state budget is in place.

Stronger Laws Needed To Lock Up Sex Offenders

ILION, 04/01/10 – At the start of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, state Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today introduced legislation to increase penalties for sex criminals.  The legislation comes in the wake of the recent indictment of Jeremy Snyder, a registered level-two sex offender charged with felony rape of an underage girl in Herkimer County. “This case is especially troubling, as this adult knowingly preyed on young girls after having been already convicted of a sex offense against a minor,” Senator Seward said.

Budget Work Cannot Wait

Seward Bands With Farmers - Fights Farm Labor Bill

ALBANY, 03/01/10 -- Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today participated in a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing on senate bill 2247b, also known as the Farm Worker Fair Labor Practice Act.

“The bill, supported mainly by New York City politicians, would force farms to close, and drive one more industry, our top industry, out of New York state,” said Senator Seward.  “Ultimately, farm workers, who the bill is aimed at protecting, would wind up on the unemployment line, costing all New Yorkers.”

License Plate Plan Lands On Scrap Heap

ALBANY, 11/16/09 – Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today hailed the governor’s decision to drop plans requiring New York motorists to purchase new license plates in April at a cost of $25 per vehicle.

“I have been fighting the license plate scheme since it was first uncovered in the budget proposal earlier this year,” said Senator Seward.  “More than 8,000 people in the 51st district joined me in the battle by signing my on-line petition and offering a resounding NO to the government cash grab.  I am pleased that together, we can declare victory in this fight.”
