Protecting Law Enforcement Animals

ALBANY, 03/19/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined senate and assembly colleagues to announce introduction of legislation that will give proper recognition to those who are often overlooked in law, law enforcement animals.  The bill (S.1079) increases the penalties for killing or injuring a police animal by making it a class D felony.  Under current law, killing or injuring a police animal is a class A misdemeanor.

Seward Continues Fight For Needy Schools

ALBANY, 03/13/13 -- Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) delivered opening remarks today during the joint budget conference committee on education meeting.  

Senator Seward served on the senate education budget subcommittee, and the plan that panel recommended to the full senate became part of the senate’s budget resolution passed on March 11.

The senate majority coalition plan:

*Jumps aid to public schools by 4.6 percent or $925 million (more than $400 million more than the governor’s plan;

*Increases the governor’s proposed restorations to the gap elimination adjustment (GEA) from $321 million to $620 million overall -- nearly doubling funding to reduce districts’ GEA and bringing it down to $1.5 billion;

Long Overdue Tax Relief and Reforms for Middle Class Families

ALBANY, 03/04/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined senate colleagues to unveil the 2013 Family Tax Relief Act, a package of tax relief and reform measures which will provide a major economic boost to New York’s struggling middle class families.

“The Family Tax Relief Act will give middle class families some much-needed breathing room by allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned money,” said Senator Seward.  “The plan takes aim at tax credits and exemptions that are long overdue for reform and provides direct tax relief that will put money back in the pockets of New York’s working class.”

Turn Out The Lights On New York's Energy Tax

 

ALBANY, 02/05/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced opposition to the governor’s proposed extension of a utility tax surcharge which would cost businesses and homeowners almost $3 billion over the next five-years.

“I voted against this hidden fee when it was first adopted several years ago, called for its repeal,  and don’t want to see it imposed on rate payers a day longer than planned,” said Senator Seward.  “New York’s utility rates are among the highest in the nation, and if we are truly going to be open for business, we need to take meaningful steps to lower those costs.”

Cutting Government Red Tape For New York Dairy Farmers

 

ALBANY, 08/15/12 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined Governor Cuomo in announcing immediate steps to cut government red tape to help New York dairy farmers capitalize on the growing Greek yogurt market.

“New York’s Greek yogurt makers are using millions of pounds of milk each day and it only makes sense that they use milk from New York dairy farms,” said Senator Seward.  “In order to facilitate this, we are cutting government red tape and partnering with our farmers so they can expand and meet growing demand for dairy products.”

Tax Relief For NY Manufacturers

 

ALBANY, 06/18/12 – The New York State Senate today passed a series of job creation bills that will reduce the cost of doing business in New York and enhance economic development.

A bill, sponsored by Senator James L. Seward R/C/I-Oneonta), that would eliminate all business taxes on manufacturers (S.7663) was among those receiving approval.

“New York State has a proud manufacturing tradition, but that tradition has suffered in recent years,” said Senator Seward.  “Eliminating the manufacturing tax will breathe new life into this vital economic sector and help create good paying jobs.”

Seward Touts Senate's 2012 College Affordability Plan

ALBANY, 05/15/12 – State Senator James L. Seward Bill Cracks Down On Auto Insurance Fraud

ALBANY, 03/22/12 – The New York State Senate today passed three bills to combat auto insurance fraud, which costs New Yorkers more than $1 billion a year, as well as legislation that would impose stronger criminal penalties for staging auto accidents. Recent cases of auto insurance fraud have uncovered massive crime rings, including doctors, lawyers and scam artists who staged accidents and used New York's no-fault insurance program as their own giant state-sponsored, ATM machine.

Seward Leads Call For Flood Safety

ALBANY, 03/13/12 – The New York State Senate today adopted a legislative resolution calling on Governor Cuomo to declare March 12 – 17, 2012 as Flood Safety Awareness Week in the State of New York.

Senate resolution 3593 was sponsored by Senator James L. Seward R/C/I-Oneonta) in conjunction with the national awareness week recognized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“We are all painfully aware of the devastation caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee late last summer,” said Senator Seward.  “Many communities across New York State, including in my senate district, suffered major flooding and continue to rebuild from the destruction.

Historic Expansion of DNA Databank Approved by Senate

ALBANY, 01/31/12 – The New York State Senate today passed legislation, co-sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta), for the largest expansion of the state’s DNA databank since it was created in 1994.  The legislation (S.5560A) mirrors the databank expansion plan proposed by Governor Cuomo in his executive budget to require people convicted of all felonies, as well as misdemeanors in the penal law, to submit DNA samples.

Next Steps To A Stronger Economy

ONEONTA, 08/25/11 – In a new video statement, State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) announces the launch of a new online survey, “The Next Steps to a Stronger Economy,” designed to gather public input on economic development initiatives to further private sector job growth.

SUNY Rational Tuition Policy

ALBANY, 06/02/11 – New York State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I, Oneonta) and Assemblywoman Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes (D, Buffalo) today were joined by State University of New York (SUNY) officials in calling for the immediate passage of legislation establishing a rational tuition policy for SUNY.

Enactment of a five-year, fair, predictable and responsible tuition plan for SUNY will protect access and affordability, allow students and families to plan for the cost of their education, and ensure that additional tuition revenue is invested in campus improvements and program development.
