Greene County Seniors Dish Up Some Winning Recipes

CATSKILL — A lively and welcoming crowd, combined with a wide assortment of homemade dishes ranging from hearty pot roast to no-bake oatmeal cookies resulted in the rousing success of the first Senior Citizen Cookoff in roughly 30 years.


Special Time For Senior Citizens

New York recently celebrated the state’s first ever Assisted Living Week.  I was fortunate to mark this special occasion by meeting with residents and caregivers at several adult care/assisted living facilities within the 51st district.  These unique facilities are filled with wonderful individuals extremely deserving of this distinctive honor.


Family Health Care Decisions Act

Imagine someone you love is incapacitated and unable to make decisions concerning his own well being.  Now imagine that there is no way you can help this individual because the proper paper work is not in place.  Even though you know very well the wishes of your loved one, your hands are tied.

I was recently afforded the great honor of meeting with a number of senior citizens from the 51st senatorial district who were visiting the Capitol to take part in the annual “New York State Senior Citizens’ Day Celebration.”

Seward Honors New York's Top Senior Citizens

ALBANY, 05/12/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) recently congratulated New York State’s top senior citizens as part of the New York State Office for the Aging 2014 Senior Citizens Day Celebration in Albany.

“Our senior citizens are vital, instrumental members of our communities,” said Senator Seward.   “The extremely active seniors honored today fulfill significant roles – volunteering with local ambulance companies, managing area food pantries, and holding elected office.”  


Empowering Seniors To Fight Scam Artists

ONEONTA, 11/24/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he will be hosting a series of free senior scam prevention forums in Cobleskill, Olive, and Sidney in the coming weeks.

“Scam artists are becoming more and more sophisticated and senior citizens are quite often the targets of these ruthless criminals,” said Senator Seward.  “Alerting seniors to some common schemes and arming them with the tools needed to steer clear of these devious crimes will go a long way toward safeguarding their financial savings and well being, that’s why I am sponsoring these events.”



ONEONTA, 12/08/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that the free senior scam prevention forum scheduled for Tuesday, December 9th at the Olive Free Library in West Shokan has been POSTPONED until further notice.

The senior scam prevention forum will be rescheduled at a later date.   


State Funding Will Help Keep Kirkside Open

ROXBURY, 04/13/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that the 2015-2016 state budget includes, at his insistence, $150,000 to assist Kirkside A Retirement Home of Distinction in Roxbury. 

“Kirkside Retirement Home plays a vital role in the lives of area senior citizens and is a cherished part of the Roxbury community,” said Senator Seward.  “Ensuring Kirkside is able to continue operating and offering services contributes greatly to the health and well being of the residents and markedly enhances the local quality of life.”


CARE Act Passes Senate

ALBANY, 04/21/15 – The New York State Senate today passed the “Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act” to educate and support the individuals who provide vital healthcare to loved ones.

The legislation (S.676), co-sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) would update New York’s Public Health Law and require hospitals to provide, at a patient’s request, discharge instructions and post-release care plans to a designated caregiver.
