Senate Targets Illegal Prescription Drug Abuse

ALBANY, 02/13/12 – With the abuse of illegally-obtained prescription narcotics growing rapidly, the New York State Senate today passed several bills to curb the black market in prescription painkillers.

Senate approval of the bills followed a roundtable discussion on the issue of abuse of prescription painkillers.  This was a second in a series of public meetings discussing legislation to combat prescription drug abuse and to examine improving New York’s prescription reporting system.

New Community Initiative To Combat Drug Abuse

ONEONTA, 02/24/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I - Oneonta) today joined Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals and the City of Oneonta Police Department to unveil a new drug take-back collection box inside the Oneonta Public Safety Building at 81 Main Street in Oneonta.  

Mallinckrodt is providing a lock box at the Oneonta police station for people to dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired medications.  This is the most recent installment of Mallinckrodt’s continued efforts for patient safety and education.

ONEONTA, 04/14/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he will be hosting the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction on Monday, April 28 in Oneonta.  The forum is one of twelve being held statewide to solicit local input on the rise in use of heroin and other opioids in New York State and develop recommendations for treating and preventing addiction.

Seward To Hold Training Class For Lifesaving Heroin Overdose Medication

ONEONTA, 05/01/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he will be hosting a free heroin/opioid overdose prevention training class on Wednesday, May 7th at the FoxCare Center in Oneonta.

“A key aspect in the short term battle against heroin and opioid abuse is preventing overdose deaths,” said Senator Seward.  “Training more individuals to administer the overdose reversal medicine Naxolone or Narcan will save lives, that’s why I am sponsoring this event and will be among those taking the class on May 7th .”

Senate Passes Seward Bill To Combat Heroin & Opioid Crisis

ALBANY, 06/19/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today spoke on the senate floor in support of legislation to fight the growing heroin and opioid abuse epidemic.  The senate passed a package of eleven bills that were part of a three-way agreement between the senate, assembly and governor.  The package includes senate bill 7912, sponsored by Senator Seward, to improve access to insurance coverage for substance abuse treatment and dependency services.
