ALBANY, 05/08/13 - The New York State Senate today passed legislation to crack down on auto insurance fraud which has led to injuries - even death - for innocent victims and costs hundreds of millions of dollars a year in higher premiums when New Yorkers already pay some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country.
The three bills approved today would significantly cut down on auto insurance scams by increasing penalties for those who commit or assist in the fraud and by giving more flexibility to insurance companies to prevent criminals from getting policies and continuing to commit auto fraud.

ONEONTA, 11/22/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today urged the new York State Parole Board to deny the release of David Dart, who murdered 18 year old Gillian “Jill” Gibbons in 1989 in Oneonta.
“This horrendous crime remains fresh in the minds of the victim’s family, her friends, and the community at large,” said Senator Seward. “I see no reason why this confessed killer should be afforded the opportunity to roam free after taking a young woman’s life in cold blood.”
ONEONTA, 02/20/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today voiced his opposition to Governor Cuomo’s proposal to provide free college educations for prison inmates:
“I talk to parents and high school students on a regular basis and one of their top concerns is college. Our young people study, stress over test scores, and work extremely hard just to gain entrance to the schools of their choice. Meanwhile, their parents scrimp, save, sacrifice, and, in many cases, take on extra jobs and loads to help with tuition bills. I can’t imagine telling these hard-working families that while they are doing everything right, a criminal sitting in a jail cell is being handed an opportunity their children don’t have.

Heroin is infiltrating all social, economic, and geographic sectors of our state and we need to take definitive action to halt this ugly trend.”
