Critical Student Health Program Receives State Funding

 

RICHFIELD SPRINGS, 04/05/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that the 2013-2014 state budget includes, at his insistence, $150,000 to establish a Bassett Healthcare Network school-based health center (SBH) at Richfield Springs Central School. 

“School-based health centers fill a great void in rural areas like those I serve,” said Senator Seward.  “Bassett Healthcare has developed a successful operating model, the largest rural SBH program in New York State, and expanding services to Richfield Springs Central School will mean healthier children and added peace of mind for parents who choose to utilize the care option.”

Homer Central Junior Serves As Ag Commissioner At YMCA Conference

 

ALBANY, 04/15/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today welcomed Homer Central School junior Alice Jenkins to Albany for the 2013 YMCA Youth and Government Conference.

“The YMCA Youth and Government Conference is a terrific hands-on teaching tool to help students hone leadership skills and learn the inner-workings of our government,” said Senator Seward.  “Alice Jenkins and her peers are our future leaders.  It is great to see their interest in public service and creative vision to improve our community and society.”

LWV Shadow Students Join Senator Seward At Capitol

ALBANY, 04/16/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today welcomed high school students from Otsego and Tompkins counties to Albany for the 13th annual Students Inside Albany conference sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation.

History Day Has Bright Future In New York

 

COOPERSTOWN, 04/29/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that the state budget includes, at his insistence, $100,000 to continue the state’s participation in National History Day.  The announcement coincided with the statewide judging of student projects in Cooperstown.

Seward On Education Fact-Finding Mission

ONEONTA, 09/30/13 - State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) will be in Onondaga County, Tuesday, October 1st at Syracuse City Hall.

Senator Seward will take part in a New York State Senate Education Committee hearing, “The Regents Reform Agenda: Assessing our Progress.” This is the second in a series of four hearings being convened by the committee under State Senator John J. Flanagan (R/C/I-East Northport), chairman.

Seward, Senate Education Committee Question New School Standards

SYRACUSE, 10/01/13 - State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I--Oneonta) today, took part in a New York State Senate Education Committee hearing, "The Regents Reform Agenda: Assessing our Progress." This was the second in a series of four hearings being convened by the committee under State Senator John J. Flanagan (R/C/I-East Northport), chairman.

The hearings present an opportunity to review reforms embarked upon in 2010 by the New York State Board of Regents. The hearings also focus on several major issues confronting educators including state assessments, the implementation of common core state standards and the protection of student privacy.

Statement on Common Core

ONEONTA, 10/04/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on ‘Common Core’ state standards and associated New York State assessment testing:

“I have been hearing from a great many on the new assessment tests that follow the 'Common Core' state standards. I appreciate everyone’s comments and thoughts.

“Common Core by itself does not mean more tests – but they will be different tests. The New York State assessment testing, which began in April of this year, is mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. New York, as a state, is not requiring more assessments. But the federal government is.
