Senate Sets Public Hearing On Affordable Care Act Concerns

ALBANY, 12/31/13 – New York Senate Health Committee Chairman Kemp Hannon and Senate Insurance Committee Chairman James L. Seward will hold a joint hearing on Monday, January 13th to hear testimony on the impact federal health care reform is having on insured individuals, families, and small businesses.

Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau) said, “We waited to call this hearing until the deadlines for enrolling had passed so we would not be interfering with the work at hand.  However, there are issues that need to be addressed and we cannot wait any longer.”

Senate Hearing Points Out Healthcare Exchange Trouble-spots

ALBANY, 01/13/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commented on a senate hearing regarding the implementation of the health insurance exchange (NY State of Health) as part of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA):

“While New York has been doing a good job when compared with the federal exchange, a number of issues have been brought to my attention.  Individuals, sole proprietors, and small business owners have seen their policies cancelled, costs to obtain new policies have skyrocketed for some, and application counselors have been unable to provide assistance in several cases.

Seward Joins Task Force To Fight Rising Heroin Epidemic

ALBANY, 03/17/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he was named to the newly created Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction. The task force will examine the rise in use of heroin and other opioids in New York State and develop recommendations for treating and preventing addiction. 

“Heroin use has reached epidemic proportions,” said Senator Seward. “Law enforcement resources are being stretched thin, public health costs are skyrocketing, and lives are being lost. Heroin is infiltrating all social, economic, and geographic sectors of our state and we need to take definitive action to halt this ugly trend.”

Seward To Host Senate Task Force On Heroin

Otsego County Mental Health Concerns Under The Microscope

ONEONTA, 04/17/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on a meeting he convened of local stakeholders to discuss the future of emergency psychiatric services in Otsego County and the surrounding region: 

“The decision by Bassett Medical center to terminate inpatient psychiatric services has wide-ranging consequences.  Today’s meeting of local stakeholders included a brief summary of what led to the decision, and more importantly, allowed for an open dialogue on actions to be taken to fill the pending treatment void.

Senate Task Force To Convene In 51st Senate District - LIVE WEBCAST AVAILABLE

ONEONTA, 04/25/14- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) will be in Otsego County, MONDAY, April 28th, at SUNY College at Oneonta.

Senator Seward, a member of the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction, will host a roundtable discussion to solicit input from area stakeholders on the growing epidemic of heroin abuse.  Senator Phil Boyle (R/C/I – Suffolk County), task force chairman, will also take part in the forum along with local health care professionals, addiction experts, law enforcement officials, and concerned citizens.

Seward To Hold Training Class For Lifesaving Heroin Overdose Medication

ONEONTA, 05/01/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he will be hosting a free heroin/opioid overdose prevention training class on Wednesday, May 7th at the FoxCare Center in Oneonta.

“A key aspect in the short term battle against heroin and opioid abuse is preventing overdose deaths,” said Senator Seward.  “Training more individuals to administer the overdose reversal medicine Naxolone or Narcan will save lives, that’s why I am sponsoring this event and will be among those taking the class on May 7th .”

Heroin Task Force Releases Report, Legislation

ALBANY, 05/28/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined senate colleagues to release a report summarizing the findings of the New York State Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction.  The report includes a comprehensive package of bills recommended for action this legislative session that target treatment, prevention, and law enforcement issues raised during extensive testimony provided by dozens of experts, parents, and concerned New Yorkers at forums held across the state.

ALBANY, 06/09/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced senate passage of a package of legislation to fight the growing heroin and opioid abuse epidemic.  A bill sponsored by Senator Seward (S.7662) that would improve access to insurance coverage for substance abuse treatment and dependency services was part of the package.
