Property Tax Relief is Overdue

For many people the great American dream is to own a home.  Unfortunately, once you achieve that dream in New York, the nightmare known as property taxes can keep you up at night.  According to the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group based in Washington, D.C., New York routinely leads the nation when it comes to high property taxes.  In fact, between 1977 and 2008, the Empire State ranked first of second in the country for its state-local tax burden compared to the U.S. average.

Homeowner Protection & Property Tax Rebate Act

ALBANY, 03/11/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced a major new property tax cut initiative that will help New Yorkers remain in their homes.  The “Homeowner Protection and Property Tax Rebate Act” would provide a property tax rebate for every middle-class homeowner, includes a cap on property taxes and significant mandate relief.

Property Tax Cap Needed For Real Relief

Extreme Makeover New York

ONEONTA, 01/07/11 – State Senator James L. Long Overdue Tax Relief and Reforms for Middle Class Families

ALBANY, 03/04/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined senate colleagues to unveil the 2013 Family Tax Relief Act, a package of tax relief and reform measures which will provide a major economic boost to New York’s struggling middle class families.

“The Family Tax Relief Act will give middle class families some much-needed breathing room by allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned money,” said Senator Seward.  “The plan takes aim at tax credits and exemptions that are long overdue for reform and provides direct tax relief that will put money back in the pockets of New York’s working class.”

STAR Registration Fact Sheet

New legislation will require all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive STAR exemptions in 2014 and subsequent years.  Registration will begin on August 19 and continue through December 31, 2013.  The NYS Tax Department will mail instructions to all current Basic STAR recipients on how to register.  Senior Citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by the new registration requirement.
