Special Session Produces Tax Cuts, Job Creation Incentives, Flood Relief

ALBANY, 12/07/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today applauded the Middle Class Tax Cut and Job Creation Plan which helps rejuvenate the upstate economy and includes special state funding to assist flood devastated communities.

“This plan means lower taxes - $690 million worth – for hard-working, middle class New Yorkers, the backbone of our communities. That’s money that will now flow through our local economy and create jobs. At the same time, we are cutting taxes for manufacturers helping them create additional jobs and continue to drive our economy forward,” Seward said.

Clothing Sales Tax Exemption - Saving Families Money

ONEONTA, 10/18/12 - State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today reminded shoppers they no longer pay state sales tax on clothing and footwear purchases up to $110.  

"Clothing purchases can be a big part of a family budget, and I was pleased to support this tax cut to help hardworking New Yorkers keep more money in their pockets. Repealing the state sales tax on clothing is projected to save a typical family of four nearly $200 a year," said Senator Seward.

Long Overdue Tax Relief and Reforms for Middle Class Families

ALBANY, 03/04/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined senate colleagues to unveil the 2013 Family Tax Relief Act, a package of tax relief and reform measures which will provide a major economic boost to New York’s struggling middle class families.

“The Family Tax Relief Act will give middle class families some much-needed breathing room by allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned money,” said Senator Seward.  “The plan takes aim at tax credits and exemptions that are long overdue for reform and provides direct tax relief that will put money back in the pockets of New York’s working class.”

STAR Registration Fact Sheet

New legislation will require all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive STAR exemptions in 2014 and subsequent years.  Registration will begin on August 19 and continue through December 31, 2013.  The NYS Tax Department will mail instructions to all current Basic STAR recipients on how to register.  Senior Citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by the new registration requirement.

Flood Victims Deserve Property Tax Break

HERKIMER, 10/08/13 – Mohawk Valley state legislators Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta), Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R/C/I-Rome), and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) today announced introduction of special legislation to assist Mohawk Valley property owners recovering from flooding during the summer of 2013.

Full-Fledged Tax Reform Needed

ALBANY, 11/19/13 - New York State Senate Republicans today issued a comprehensive report on state taxes that calls for personal income taxes, business taxes, estate taxes and local property taxes to be reformed, simplified and reduced.  The report makes sweeping recommendations for reducing the tax burden on all New Yorkers.  The plan recommends enacting a permanent two-percent state spending cap and dedicating surplus revenues to tax reductions.
