MOHAWK, 04/14/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined Village of Mohawk Mayor Irene Sweet to announce the recent completion of the Minnow Brook culvert repair project. The project was funded through a $400,000 Multi Modal grant previously secured by Senator Seward.
“Local infrastructure is critical to the well-being of families and individuals as well as future economic growth,” said Senator Seward. “Often times, however, repair costs are just too much for a small rural municipality to afford. I was pleased to step in and help secure funding to protect public safety and the bottom line for those who live and work in the Village of Mohawk.”
ALBANY, 05/24/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced senate approval of legislation eliminating the state gas tax for three key holiday weekends to help families cope with the rising cost at the pump.
“New Yorkers are facing increasing costs at every turn and soaring gas prices have many tapped out,” said Senator Seward. “Families need a break, especially over the summer holidays when many are traveling. A gas tax holiday would provide some much needed relief.”
ONEONTA, 04/08/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) says the late state budget is now jeopardizing thousands of jobs and putting public safety at risk.
“The lack of urgency shown by some in Albany to set to work on a state budget is now sending individuals to the unemployment line,” said Senator Seward. “We need to start public conference committees immediately and complete a state budget to avoid a total state shut down.”
Along with pressing for ramped up budget work, Senator Seward is also calling on the governor to reverse his recent decision to suspend payments for ongoing state-funded capital construction projects until a new state budget is in place.
CORTLAND, 12/01/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) is calling on the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to complete reconstruction work of the route 281 and 13 corridor in the Town of Cortlandville on the original timetable.
“Delaying reconstruction of this important thoroughfare restricts traffic flow and threatens the safety of the traveling public,” said Senator Seward. “The route 281 and 13 corridor is growing and further delays of this project will stifle desired development and inconvenience local business owners.”
ONEONTA, 07/14/09 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) is calling on the governor to stop wasting taxpayer money on needless road signs marking American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) projects.
“A plan to post specially designed road signs identifying economic stimulus project work sites is a complete waste of taxpayer dollars,” said Senator Seward. “I thought the idea behind the stimulus money was to get people back to work, not promote government. These signs are simply a shameless plug that wastes the public’s money. Try explaining to an out of work father or mother or a small businessman trying to afford health insurance for his employees how a big green sign is helping stimulate the economy.”
ONEONTA, 06/28/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) recently called on the NYS Department of Transportation to abandon a new special use permit requirement for local parades and community events.
“New York state is infamous for overregulation,” said Senator Seward. “One of my long-standing, top priorities has been to reduce red tape for businesses, schools and local governments, now it seems small town parades and special events also need protection.”
ONEONTA, 08/18/11 – Following an appeal from State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) the NYS Department of Transportation will review safety measures on Route 145 at the entrance of Cairo-Durham Middle & High School where the recent death of a student has sparked concern.
“Highway safety is always one of my top concerns,” said Senator Seward. “Ensuring safety near a school, where young lives are at stake, is an absolute priority.”
PRATTSVILLE, 08/31/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined Governor Andrew Cuomo, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate for a tour of flood ravaged portions of upstate New York.
“The devastation is utterly astonishing,” said Senator Seward. “My heart goes out to the families and individuals who are demonstrating such amazing courage and fortitude in the face of this tragedy.
“I also want to commend the first responders, National Guard members and local elected officials who have worked tirelessly around the clock to protect life and property before, during and after the storm.”
ONEONTA, 09/01/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commended the decision to suspend certain permit requirements as homeowers and municipal workers rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
"As property owners work to safely return to their homes and local officials perform needed emergency repairs there is no time to wade through bureaucratic red tape,” said Senator Seward. “Putting certain permitting requirements on hold removes a roadblock to recovery and allows vital work to take place immediately.”
