Seward Warns of Looming Clothing Tax

ONEONTA, 08/30/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) is advising  families to do their back-to-school shopping as soon as possible in order to avoid a sales tax on clothing that will take another bite out of their finances after it goes into effect on October 1.

Move Over For Emergency Vehicles

Each and every day thousands of law enforcement and emergency workers risk their lives to protect the citizens of New York.  Throughout my time in the state senate, I have proudly partnered with these brave, caring men and women on a number of initiatives to assist them in performing their critical duties.

Business Boost For The Mohawk Valley

“Bringing down the cost of doing business is the critical component of job creation in upstate New York.  That is why I have strongly advocated extending municipal electric service from the Village of Frankfort to the Frankfort 5S Business Park.  With final approval from the New York State Public Service Commission, the business park will now be equipped to offer manufacturers and other prospective tenants low cost power to go along with excellent transportation routes and a first-class local workforce.  All things considered, the “Pumpkin Patch” is now one of the premier sites for economic development in the Mohawk Valley.”

State Correction Officers Needed

As young people consider their futures, some may want to think about working for New York State in various positions of law enforcement and correctional services.

The state periodically has openings in law enforcement (state police, park police, university police, environmental conservation and corrections). New York's prisons, which range from minimum to maximum security, need reliable, qualified individuals to serve as corrections officers. Crime is generally on the decrease in our state, and we can credit the legislature for tough policies and new laws that have reduced our crime rate. But we will always have the need to incarcerate those who violate our laws, and we will need people to operate our prisons.

Seward Named "Hero of Reform"

ONEONTA, 08/16/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that he has pledged his support to the “New York Uprising” reform agenda and has been named a Hero of Reform by the grassroots effort.

“I have fought for a number of key reforms during my time in the state senate,” said Senator Seward.  “With my support, legislation has been approved to open up the state budget process, create a more transparent senate and clean up Albany.  Unfortunately, over the last two years, one party rule has dominated state government and many of the landmark reforms have been ignored.”

Facts About Asthma

As the summer months begin to fade away and the back to school season approaches, many children will be ramping up their level of physical activity.  Some may be returning to sports or joining an athletic team for the first time while others may be looking forward to physical education class or simply rejoining their friends on the school playground.  No matter how intense the participation, as youngsters get back into the swing of things, it is important to watch for signs for the chronic condition of asthma.

State Budget Disappoints

Finally, after long last, a state budget has received approval in Albany.  The spending plan was adopted 125 days late but all of that extra time did nothing to help generate a budget that New Yorkers can be proud of.

For the second year in a row, Albany leaders thumbed their noses at the concept of transparency.  In direct violation of the 2007 Budget Reform Law, the governor, and leaders in the assembly and senate huddled behind closed doors to fabricate the $136 billion plan.  Instead of convening open, bi-partisan conference committees to negotiate spending in full view of the public, three men from New York City decided they knew best.

Budget Comes In Late, Comes Up Short

ONEONTA, 08/04/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commented on the special legislative session and final approval of the state budget:

"Over four months past the April 1st deadline New York finally has a state budget, but the extra wait hardly helped produce a quality spending plan.  For the second year in a row, the state is being treated to a budget fabricated behind closed doors that raise taxes, spends at an unsustainable rate and fails to create any new jobs or improve New York’s economy.

Springbrook Expansion to Bring Jobs, Improve Quality of Life for Developmentally Disabled Students and Families

“The Springbrook expansion will change lives for the better on several levels and will pay future dividends, both economically and socially.  The project will provide quality jobs at a time when the area economy needs a boost.  It will produce long term savings to the state, something every single taxpayer can appreciate.  And, most important, the expansion will improve the lives of children with developmental disabilities and their families," said Senator Seward.

Safety Review of Popular Greene County Hiking Trail Needed

ONEONTA, 07/30/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) recently called on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to review safety measures at the Devil’s Kitchen hiking area in the Town of Hunter.

“Two fatal hiking accidents this year at Devil’s Kitchen have prompted concerns that must be evaluated,” said Senator Seward.  “The Department of Environmental Conservation should take steps to assess the trail’s safety and to ensure proper warnings are present.”

Time For Government Reform Overdue

Reform is a word that is tossed around a lot by elected officials.  By definition the word reform means to change and improve something by correcting faults – hard to argue with that concept.  Looking at our state government, certainly a few faults need to be corrected.  But simply saying you support reform, and making real improvements, are two different things

I have fought for a number of key reforms during my time in the state senate.  With my support, legislation has been approved to open up the state budget process, create a more transparent senate and clean up Albany.  Unfortunately, over the last two years, one party rule has dominated state government and many of the landmark reforms have been ignored.

Give The People What They Want

With the state budget still unfinished, I have had no shortage of comments from constituents on the unacceptable situation.  Letters to my office, e-mails through my website, and personal conversations at events around the district have all demonstrated a sense of public frustration.  I echo the sentiment.

The 2010-2011 state budget is on its way to becoming one of the latest in state history.  It was drawn up behind closed doors, and then adopted in piecemeal fashion and it still isn’t complete.  Perhaps that is just as well, because when all is said and done, we will be saddled with a budget that spends over $136 billion, includes new and higher taxes, shuns property tax relief and decimates our upstate small businesses.

Renewed Call for Property Tax Relief Needed

One of my highest priorities since first being elected to office has been to help individuals and families realize the dream of home ownership.  The only way to maintain that dream is by providing meaningful property tax relief.  Sadly, some Albany politicians fail to share my vision.

One of the most advantageous property tax relief initiatives in New York is the historic School Tax Relief (STAR) program.  I fought hard for this plan and helped win passage of legislation in 1997 clearing the way for the key savings program.

New York Parks Offer Summer Time Fun

As families and individuals look for ways to enjoy the wonderful summer weather, people need to look no further than our local state parks.  July is Park and Recreation Month across the nation and here in New York we have many great reasons to celebrate.

Our public parks and state lands are among our greatest resources, particularly in upstate, and they fulfill a number of roles.  They are a strong source of tourist dollars, drawing people from other parts of New York, neighboring states, and across the nation.  Along with generating money for the state, our parks also help support many other businesses, from small grocery stores, to souvenir shops selling locally produced keepsakes, to farm stands offering homegrown fruits and vegetables.

Gun Control Legislation Derailed

Legislation brought before the state senate recently, known as the microstamping bill, has generated quite a bit of publicity.  The measure is gun control under the guise of crime prevention.  I voted against the bill and am pleased to say it was pulled from the senate floor after failing to garner enough support for passage.
