Otsego County Economic Development Summit II Set For November 14

ONEONTA, 10/30/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced plans for his second economic development summit in Otsego County.

New Parameters For Emergency Services Loan Fund

ALBANY, 10/22/13 – A highly successful state loan program to assist first responders is changing with the times under legislation (S.3728B) signed into law today. The legislation was sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) and increases the amounts of allowable loans under the emergency services loan fund.

“Our first responders put their lives on the line every time they answer an emergency call and need to be outfitted with the latest safety gear,” said Senator Seward. “Emergency equipment costs, like everything else, continue to rise, and it is essential that this successful loan program evolves to meet the changing needs of our fire and rescue squads.”

Seward Funding Energizes NETS Expansion

ONEONTA, 10/04/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on ‘Common Core’ state standards and associated New York State assessment testing:

“I have been hearing from a great many on the new assessment tests that follow the 'Common Core' state standards. I appreciate everyone’s comments and thoughts.

“Common Core by itself does not mean more tests – but they will be different tests. The New York State assessment testing, which began in April of this year, is mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. New York, as a state, is not requiring more assessments. But the federal government is.

Seward, Senate Education Committee Question New School Standards

SYRACUSE, 10/01/13 - State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I--Oneonta) today, took part in a New York State Senate Education Committee hearing, "The Regents Reform Agenda: Assessing our Progress." This was the second in a series of four hearings being convened by the committee under State Senator John J. Flanagan (R/C/I-East Northport), chairman.

The hearings present an opportunity to review reforms embarked upon in 2010 by the New York State Board of Regents. The hearings also focus on several major issues confronting educators including state assessments, the implementation of common core state standards and the protection of student privacy.

Swift Fix To EI Program Billing Needed

ONEONTA, 09/24/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced his strong support for a swift solution to a billing situation that has placed Early Intervention Program services for hundreds of special needs children at risk.

“Worried parents and dedicated providers alike have contacted me in regard to the newly created complexities in the Early Intervention (EI) Program payment system,” said Senator Seward.  “Providers are not being paid, and, more significantly, children in need of vital services are going without the care they desperately need.   Swift action must be taken to correct this detrimental situation.”

Flood Recovery Funds Delivered To Mohawk Valley

STAR Registration Fact Sheet

New legislation will require all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive STAR exemptions in 2014 and subsequent years.  Registration will begin on August 19 and continue through December 31, 2013.  The NYS Tax Department will mail instructions to all current Basic STAR recipients on how to register.  Senior Citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by the new registration requirement.
