Mohawk Valley Senators Advance Flood Recovery Strategy

UTICA, 01/29/14 – Mohawk Valley state legislators Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta), Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R/C/I-Rome), Senator Hugh T. Farley (R-Schenectady), and Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) today announced senate passage of legislation to rewrite New York State’s disaster response playbook. The bills are in response to multiple floods and storm events throughout last summer, which caused an estimated $80 million in damage between June 26 and July 3 in the Mohawk Valley alone. 

The legislative package includes:

ALBANY, 01/23/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today commented on New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John King’s appearance before the senate education committee in regard to the implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards and new state testing assessments:

Over 2,000 Rules & Regs Warrant Reform

ALBANY, 01/22/14  – The New York State Senate Majority Coalition recently issued a comprehensive report that sheds light on New York State’s notoriously dense regulatory structure and identifies 2,219 specific rules, regulations and practices that put New York’s businesses at a competitive disadvantage.

 

The report is the product of surveys, meetings, community outreach and the input of over 100 business owners, advocacy organizations and individuals that participated in one of nine industry-specific public forums conducted throughout the state.

Statement On Governor's Budget Proposal

ALBANY, 01/21/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commented on Governor Cuomo’s budget proposal:
“I share in the governor’s optimism that we will produce a fourth straight on-time state budget that keeps spending in check, enhances private sector job growth, and delivers meaningful property tax cuts.  

“We are working with a budget surplus, thanks to the fiscal responsibility exhibited over the last three years, and we must continue to budget in that vein.  In fact, I believe we need to enact a permanent state spending cap to ensure that budget restraint continues long-term.

NY Jobs For Heroes

ALBANY, 01/14/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today joined veterans and senate colleagues to call for passage of the “NY Jobs for Heroes Program” to support service-connected disabled veteran owned small businesses. 

The legislation (S.2803B) co-sponsored by Senator Seward mirrors the highly successful federal program and is currently in use in nearly forty other states.  The senate has repeatedly passed the bill since its introduction in 2007, and Governor Cuomo offered his support for the concept during his recent State of the State address.

Senate Hearing Points Out Healthcare Exchange Trouble-spots

ALBANY, 01/13/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commented on a senate hearing regarding the implementation of the health insurance exchange (NY State of Health) as part of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA):

Seward Introduces Otsego County's New Economic Development Leadership Team

ONEONTA, 01/10/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) and Chairman of the County of Otsego Industrial Development Agency Sharon Oberriter today jointly announced a new leadership team has been established to carry out Otsego County’s economic development strategy with an eye toward greater economic growth.

Alexander “Sandy” Mathes, Jr., past executive director of the Greene County IDA, has been retained as a consultant to lead Otsego County’s effort and will team with Elizabeth Horvath of Cooperstown who will serve as the IDA’s chief operating officer.

Senate Sets Public Hearing On Affordable Care Act Concerns

ALBANY, 12/31/13 – New York Senate Health Committee Chairman Kemp Hannon and Senate Insurance Committee Chairman James L. Seward will hold a joint hearing on Monday, January 13th to hear testimony on the impact federal health care reform is having on insured individuals, families, and small businesses.

Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau) said, “We waited to call this hearing until the deadlines for enrolling had passed so we would not be interfering with the work at hand.  However, there are issues that need to be addressed and we cannot wait any longer.”

Seward & Hannon Fight For Children With Special Needs

ALBANY, 12/09/13 – New York Senate Health Committee Chairman Kemp Hannon and Senate Insurance Committee Chairman James L. Seward today introduced legislation to preserve New York State’s Early Intervention Program and make certain that children with special needs receive the care they need. 

The legislation (S.6002) requires the state to make prompt payment to early intervention providers and ensures that retroactive payments will be made to providers who have been waiting for reimbursement since a new state system went into effect on April 1.

Help Send Holiday Cheer To Our Servicemen & Women

ONEONTA, 11/25/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that his three district offices will serve as drop off points for holiday cards to be sent to service members as part of the American Red Cross 2013 Holiday Mail for Heroes program.

“Sending a holiday card to a serviceman or woman is a simple, yet warmhearted way to deliver a personal thank you for the sacrifices they make to defend our freedoms year-round,” said Senator Seward. “I am extremely pleased to take part in this program and privileged that I can help facilitate this effort.”
