Schoharie County Farmer Takes Helm As State Ag Commissioner

ALBANY, 05/06/14-- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today congratulated Richard A. Ball following his unanimous confirmation by the New York Senate as commissioner of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Seward To Hold Training Class For Lifesaving Heroin Overdose Medication

ONEONTA, 05/01/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he will be hosting a free heroin/opioid overdose prevention training class on Wednesday, May 7th at the FoxCare Center in Oneonta.

“A key aspect in the short term battle against heroin and opioid abuse is preventing overdose deaths,” said Senator Seward.  “Training more individuals to administer the overdose reversal medicine Naxolone or Narcan will save lives, that’s why I am sponsoring this event and will be among those taking the class on May 7th .”

Senate Approves Bill Dubbing Herkimer Diamond Official State Mineral

ALBANY, 04/29/14 – The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.3051) that would designate the Herkimer Diamond as the official state mineral.  The legislation, sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta), celebrates the distinctive quartz crystals from the Mohawk Valley.

Senate Task Force Forum on Heroin and Opioid Addiction- Full Video

ONEONTA, 04/28/14- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) today hosted the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction in Oneonta.  The forum was one of fourteen being held statewide to solicit local input on the rise in use of heroin and other opioids in New York State and develop recommendations for treating and preventing addiction.

Senator Seward, a member of the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction, was joined by Senator Phil Boyle (R/C/I – Suffolk County), task force chairman, local health care professionals, addiction experts, law enforcement officials, and concerned citizens.

State Budget Paves Way For Local Highway Improvements

ALBANY, 04/15/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that crucial funding to support local highway improvements is included in the 2014-15 state budget.  

“Local roads, bridges, and culverts are the backbone of our state’s infrastructure,” said Senator Seward.  “County and town highway superintendents from throughout my district joined me in Albany last month to call for added state funding – and their voices were heard.”

After five years without any increase in Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) funding, the new budget includes a second year of record funding - $438 million – for important local highway, road, and bridge repair projects.

MOSA Dissolution Signed Into Law

ALBANY, 04/11/14 – Dissolution of the Montgomery, Otsego, Schoharie Solid Waste Authority has New York State approval under legislation (S.6181/A.8406) signed into law today.  The legislation was sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I- Oneonta) and follows a home rule request from the three member counties and the authority.

Seward Delivers Funding To Protect Owasco Lake

OWASCO, 04/03/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that the new  2014-15 state budget includes, at his insistence, $200,000 to implement the Dutch Hollow Brook Watershed Restoration Project.

“This grant protects Cayuga County’s natural resources and is a cost-effective down payment on our future,” said Senator Seward.  “Owasco Lake provides drinking water to 50,000 residents. Additionally, it is the central feature of the local landscape and economy.  We need to ensure its viability and vitality today and for generations to come.”

ALBANY, 03/27/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today called on assembly Democrats to join with senate Republicans in enacting a final state budget that will address the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) which has robbed school districts of millions of dollars in education aid.

Seward Joins Task Force To Fight Rising Heroin Epidemic

ALBANY, 03/17/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced that he was named to the newly created Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction. The task force will examine the rise in use of heroin and other opioids in New York State and develop recommendations for treating and preventing addiction. 

“Heroin use has reached epidemic proportions,” said Senator Seward. “Law enforcement resources are being stretched thin, public health costs are skyrocketing, and lives are being lost. Heroin is infiltrating all social, economic, and geographic sectors of our state and we need to take definitive action to halt this ugly trend.”

Budget Conference Committees Convene

ALBANY, 03/17/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) has been named to the education and higher education budget conference committees which held their first meetings today in Albany. 

Regarding his education conference committee assignment Senator Seward said:

"The senate budget resolution increases school aid by $811.9 million from last year with a $541 million restoration of the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) which has hurt our area schools.  Eliminating the GEA has been a top priority for me, and, to date, the senate is the only legislative branch to fully target this unfair hit on our area schools."

Senate Budget Resolution Meets Real Needs

“I voted no on all nominees for three reasons – to express no-confidence in the incumbent regents seeking re-election, to challenge the flawed selection process used to choose the candidates, and, most importantly, to speak for frustrated students, parents and teachers fed up with the failed implementation of Common Core.

ALBANY, 03/10/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today stated that he will be voting against the re-election of four members of the New York State Education Board of Regents when balloting is held Tuesday, March 11.
