ALBANY, 02/12/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today congratulated Cortland County on the receipt of a $6 million grant through the Statewide Interoperable Communications Grant (SICG) program to upgrade emergency communications.
“Emergency responders depend on a reliable communication network to do their job and save lives,” said Senator Seward. “This grant award, the second received by Cortland County, will not only help protect homes and businesses but also means that firefighters, ambulance workers and police will be safer when answering emergency calls. The funding also saves taxpayers from a major expense.”
ALBANY, 02/11/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today met with school officials from Moravia Central School at the Capitol in Albany.
“After traveling to Moravia recently for a tour of the school and a chance to speak with students, teachers and administrators, I was pleased the contingent from Moravia Central School returned the favor by visiting me at the Capitol,” said Senator Seward. “As I work to negotiate a state budget that meets the needs of our students, and helps hold the line on property taxes, it is important to hear, first-hand, from the educators and administrators on the front line.”
ONEONTA, 02/11/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that after making multiple appeals, NYSEG is scheduled to take several steps to improve electrical service in the Town and Village of Laurens in Otsego County.
Senator Seward has met with local officials and New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) representatives to discuss the high number of outages within the Laurens area and call for service upgrades to improve reliability.
SCHOHARIE, 02/05/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today made a special budget presentation to school superintendents and board of education members from Schoharie County school districts. Assemblyman Pete Lopez (R/C/I-Schoharie) joined Senator Seward for the presentation which focused on the governor’s 2013-2014 budget proposal and its impact on rural school districts.
ALBANY, 02/05/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced opposition to the governor’s proposed extension of a utility tax surcharge which would cost businesses and homeowners almost $3 billion over the next five-years.
“I voted against this hidden fee when it was first adopted several years ago, called for its repeal, and don’t want to see it imposed on rate payers a day longer than planned,” said Senator Seward. “New York’s utility rates are among the highest in the nation, and if we are truly going to be open for business, we need to take meaningful steps to lower those costs.”

“When the Thruway Authority floated a proposal to hike tolls on trucks and other commercial vehicles I was among a loud chorus of elected officials, business leaders and concerned citizens denouncing the plot.
“Abandoning this ill-conceived toll hike plan is the right thing to do. The Thruway Authority, like the rest of state government, needs to focus on cost saving measures to right the fiscal ship, instead of simply hiking the cost of doing business in New York.
ONEONTA, 12/05/12 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today marked “Repeal Day” by visiting the under-construction Roots Brewing Company in Oneonta.
“Repeal Day” commemorates the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 5th, 1933 ending prohibition.

“With Hurricane Sandy predicted to impact the region in the coming days, residents should stay informed and prepare for the potential of severe weather. I am pleased Governor Cuomo is readying state emergency operations personnel and already the New York Power Authority and the NYCDEP are releasing water and lowering reservoir levels in Schoharie County to reduce the potential for flooding. These precautionary measures are sensible steps that will help prepare our region in the event Hurricane Sandy strikes.
HERKIMER, 10/25/12 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) and Assemblyman Marc Butler (R/C/I – Newport) are continuing their appeal to New York State Department of Transportation for a thorough review of traffic safety issues on Route 28 in the Village and Town of Herkimer.
Earlier this year, Senator Seward and Assemblyman Butler brought local residents and municipal officials together to call on NYSDOT to examine traffic safety concerns along Route 28 between West German Street and Shells Bush Road. A response from NYSDOT Interim Regional Director John Williams indicated that after a review of accident history, traffic volumes, speed, and available sight distance, a passing zone closure and speed limit reduction is not recommended.
ONEONTA, 10/18/12 - State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today reminded shoppers they no longer pay state sales tax on clothing and footwear purchases up to $110.
"Clothing purchases can be a big part of a family budget, and I was pleased to support this tax cut to help hardworking New Yorkers keep more money in their pockets. Repealing the state sales tax on clothing is projected to save a typical family of four nearly $200 a year," said Senator Seward.
ONEONTA, 10/03/12 – Veterans throughout the state will be able to display their veteran status proudly on their drivers’ licenses under legislation (S.6799) signed into law today. The new legislation was co-sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I–Oneonta) and inspired in part by a request from a proud serviceman from the 51st district.
“This legislation is a straightforward method that will identify veterans, who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms, and help them receive special discounts at businesses statewide, ” said Senator Seward. “Easing the ID process for veterans and businesses who want to provide our brave servicemen and women with a thank you shouldn’t be that difficult.”
