Senator Klein Honors Bronx Student, Aspiring Filmmaker and Riverdale Resident, Sofie Somoroff, at 16th Annual Women of Distinction Celebration

ALBANY, NY – Senator Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored Sofie Somoroff, a seventeen year old from the Bronx at the 16th Annual Women of Distinction celebration that took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Late last year, Somoroff was named the Grand Prize Winner of the OnBuzz Reach for the Stars Aspiring Filmmakers Contest for her lyrical, 71-second “micro-movie,” entitled “Me,” that concerns the subject of bullying. Somoroff is a junior at Bronx High School of Science and a resident of Riverdale.

Senate Passes Klein Bill Empowering D.A.'s to Evict Drug Dealers and Violent Criminals from Neighborhood Homes

Sen. Jeff Klein Announces Inclusion of Hire-a-Vet Tax Credit in NYS Budget to Combat High Unemployment Rate Among Young Returning Veterans

BRONX, N.Y. – Today, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) announced that his Hire-a-Vet Tax Credit, a program that will provide every business that hires a post-9/11 veteran with a tax credit of up to $15,000, is now officially a part of state budget. Senator Klein fought for the tax credit during this year’s budget negotiations after learning about the sky-high unemployment rate among New York’s returning veterans.

Senator Klein Announces Tax Credits for Small Businesses; Highlights Impact on Bronx Businesses

BRONX, NY - Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), alongside over 35 business owners in the Bronx and Westchester, announced specific tax credits and reforms passed in the budget that will deliver targeted help to small businesses. Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein and the Independent Democratic Conference Release Comprehensive Plan to Overhaul Campaign Finance Laws and Implement Comprehensive Public Financing System for State Elections

 

April 12, 2013 - Today, Senate Co-Leader and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and members of the IDC proposed sweeping reforms to New York State’s current campaign finance laws. The IDC’s proposal would introduce a comprehensive system of public campaign financing under which all qualifying candidates would be eligible to receive public matching funds. Under the IDC’s plan, candidates opting not to participate in the public financing system would be required to participate in a completely overhauled campaign finance system.

Albany, NY -- At the State Capitol on Wednesday, Padma Lakshmi, host of Bravo TV’s Top Chef and co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, joined Senate Majority Coalition Leader Jeffrey D. Klein and members of the Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference to kick-off a Teen Health Awareness Campaign.  The campaign focuses on reducing adolescent obesity, educating students about the health consequences of short and long-term alcohol and substance abuse, and raising awareness among young women and health professionals about endometriosis, an often undiagnosed but debilitating disease.  March is Endometriosis month.  At the press conference, Senator Klein was joined by seventh graders from JHS 141, a middle school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

Senator Jeff Klein Announces Release of $646,271 Grant for Village of Pelham Wolfs Lane Park

PELHAM, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined Village of Pelham Mayor Ed Hotchkiss, Deputy Mayor Geoff Lewis and Pelham Trustees, Suzie Marciona, Adam Kagan and Paul McGoldrich in announcing the release of $646,271 in capitol grant funds for improvements to Wolfs Lane Park.

 

Senator Klein deemed the grant a “boost for the Village of Pelham and for the community at large. I believe that this funding will allow the park to better serve the residents – particularly the children - of Pelham. Parks bring communities together and the investment in Wolfs Lane Park improvements now will give Pelham a place of beauty, recreation and community building for many years to come.”

ALBANY, NY - In the wake of two military deaths linked to the use of a risky over the counter dietary supplement, New York State Senate Majority Coalition Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) introduced legislation today that would immediately ban all future sales of products containing the popular but dangerous substance. The supplement, known as dimethylamylamine, or DMAA, is currently banned in six countries, as well as by the U.S. military and nearly every amateur and professional sports organization.

Senator Klein Hosts Annual Black History Month Breakfast

BRONX, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined former New York City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, local elected officials, African-American Community leaders and nearly 300 constituents in celebrating Black History Month at his annual breakfast at Villa Barone Manor today. At the breakfast, the program included a keynote address from former New York City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, musical performances from the Reverend Nathaniel Tyler Lloyd Legacy Choir of Trinity Baptist Church and the presentation of awards to African-American community leaders for their work in the district and beyond.

Senator Klein and Health Officials, Four Loko Agrees to Change Misleading Packaging and Labeling

NEW YORK, NY – After over a year of pressure by State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), the Independent Democratic Conference, and other health advocacy organizations, the makers of popular alcoholic malt beverage Four Loko, have agreed to make significant changes to their packaging.  On Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission said that the creators, Chicago based Phusion Projects, would be required to place an “alcohol facts panel” in the back of their malt-flavored beverages.  The containers will also be re-packaged so they can be resealed, a measure that experts say will reduce the likelihood of customers guzzling down the beverage in one short sitting.

Senator Klein Visits with Students in PS 83’s Project BOOST Program at Restaurant in Morris Park

BRONX, NY -  Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined students, parents and teachers from PS 83 today for lunch at 900 Park, a local restaurant on Morris Park Avenue. At the lunch, Senator Klein learned how a grant he provided through Project Boost to 12 schools in his district, including PS 83, has been integrated into the curriculum. The lunch itself was an event for BOOST children to offer them the opportunity to dine at a local restaurant and meet Senator Klein. Senator Klein is planning to visit all 12 participating schools in his district over the course of this semester. Senator Klein called the program dynamic and innovative:

Senator Klein and IDC Release Economic Report Outlining New Evidence in Support of a Minimum Wage Increase

 

ALBANY, N.Y. - Building upon growing momentum in support of a minimum wage increase, the Independent Democratic Conference today released a new economic report underscoring the importance of raising the minimum wage to New York’s female and minority workforce. According to the report, New York’s low-wage women and minority workers will experience an increase in earnings by over one billion dollars if the minimum wage is increased to $8.50 or $8.75. This cross-section of low-wage workers is critical to New York’s economy since, as the report illustrates, women and minority workers make up a disproportionate number of New York’s minimum wage workers.

Senate Bipartisan Task Force on Hurricane Sandy Recovery Releases Preliminary Report Outlining Recommendations on Storm Relief, Contingency Planning and Disaster Mitigation

Less than three months after Senate Co-Leaders Jeffrey D. Klein and Dean G. Skelos launched the New York State Senate Bipartisan Task Force on Hurricane Sandy recovery, the Task Force has released its preliminary report and recommendations on Sandy relief and storm planning. The preliminary report and recommendations come after Task Force members toured storm damaged communities across the New York City Metro Area, including Freeport, Island Park, Oceanside, The Rockaways, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Hudson Valley.
