KLEIN SECURES NEW HOME FOR ROOSTER RESCUED FROM COCKFIGHT

Bird to be Delivered to Recovery Sanctuary

 

BRONX, NY – State Senator and Deputy Majority Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) announced on Friday that he has secured a safe, long term home for an abused rooster recently rescued from a South Bronx cockfight. The owner of the Hollywood Haircuts barber shop on City Island has been rehabilitating and caring for the rooster, Coco, since his rescue earlier this year. Following the press conference, Klein’s office delivered the rooster to its new home at the Berkshire Bird Paradise Sanctuary in Petersburg, NY.

Klein Secures, Delivers, Supplies In Preparation for Hurricane Irene

In preparation for Hurricane Irene, Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, (D-Bronx/ Westchester), secured and today delivered much needed supplies to vulnerable communities and organizations throughout his district.

The supplies, which included sandbags to help hold back potential flood waters, as well as sleeping bags and water, were donated by Bronx and Westchester businesses.

Protecting Houses of Worship: Sen. Klein Proposes Tougher Penalties for Crimes on Religious Institutions

 

PELHAM BAY,  BRONX, N.Y. –  Following a rash of break-ins and burglaries targeting houses of worship in the Northern Bronx, State Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) today announced legislation to stiffen criminal penalties for those who steal, or damage items and property in churches, synagogues and other religious institutions.

Senate Jeff Klein Joins North Bronx Girl Scouts for Ice Skating Event Commemorating 100 Year Anniversary

VAN CORTLANDT PARK, BRONX, NY – Senator Jeff Klein joined Girl Scouts from the North Bronx 124 Service Unit yesterday for “Girl Scouts on Ice,” an afternoon event at the new Van Cortlandt Park Ice-Skating Rink. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Riverdale, pictured on the right) and New York City Council candidate, Andrew Cohen, were also in attendance. At the event, Senator Klein distributed patches commemorating the 100 year anniversary of Girl Scouts of Greater New York. Girl Scouts from all levels of scouting; grades K-12 attended the event.

Senate Unanimously Passes Klein Bill Aimed at Fighting Childhood Obesity in High Risk Communities

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Monday night, the New York State Senate passed legislation to combat childhood obesity by implementing a wide array of initiatives. These initiatives include: expanding community gardens where fresh produce is grown, kick-starting new obesity programs that encourage schoolchildren to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and launching new services through Cornell University that provide obesity and respiratory disease prevention programs in high risk areas. Additionally, New York State will establish direct marketing campaigns aimed at encouraging children in high-risk neighborhoods to consume healthy foods.

Senator Klein Honors Bronx Student, Aspiring Filmmaker and Riverdale Resident, Sofie Somoroff, at 16th Annual Women of Distinction Celebration

ALBANY, NY – Senator Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored Sofie Somoroff, a seventeen year old from the Bronx at the 16th Annual Women of Distinction celebration that took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Late last year, Somoroff was named the Grand Prize Winner of the OnBuzz Reach for the Stars Aspiring Filmmakers Contest for her lyrical, 71-second “micro-movie,” entitled “Me,” that concerns the subject of bullying. Somoroff is a junior at Bronx High School of Science and a resident of Riverdale.

Sen. Jeff Klein and NYC DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan Join Forces to Highlight Dangerous Speeding at PS 81 in Riverdale

RIVERDALE, NY — Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and PS 81 parents today to release new statistics demonstrating a pattern of dangerous speeding near PS 81, an elementary school in Riverdale. To combat the danger posed by this consistent speeding, Senator Klein has introduced legislation in the Senate that would authorize the use of speed cameras in New York City school zones where dangerous speeding is most prevalent. The legislation, S.4459A/A.4327A, is being considered in both the Assembly and the Senate in the final weeks of this year’s legislative session.
