Senator Jeff Klein Joins City Island’s Pilot Cove Manor Residents to Commemorate Arrival of New Senior Van

CITY ISLAND, NY – This afternoon, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined Pilot Cove Manor Residents and community leaders to commemorate the arrival of a new senior van for Pilot Cove Manor nursing facility, home to over 100 seniors.

Senator Klein said, “I am proud that working with the NYS Department of Transportation and Ms. Gallagher, we were able to replace Pilot Cove Manor’s previous van – a van that had been in use for over twenty years. This senior van provides a critical service to the seniors here at Pilot Cove and I am pleased that I was able to make sure that City Island’s seniors are transported safely and soundly.”

New York State IDC Day Care Report

The IDC released a new, investigative report today revealing the lackluster state of day care centers across New York. In preparing the report, the IDC examined on-site inspection reports of over 1,500 day care centers statewide.

The inspections, which are regularly conducted by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), revealed that hundreds of day care centers across New York have accrued multiple violations over the past 24 months, with little or no enforcement by OCFS.

Senate Passes Klein Bill Toughening Child Pornography Laws

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Thursday, the New York State Senate passed legislation to impose harsher penalties against child pornographers, including increased prison time by way of consecutive sentences, as well as changing punishments from felonies to first degree crimes. The bill also extends protections to all children under the age of 18. Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) is the prime sponsor of the legislation.

The legislation (S2266), would amend current law with the following measures:

1) Ensure that criminals face longer periods in prison when charged with multiple crimes by imposing consecutive sentences;

2) Provide additional protection to minors by increasing the age benchmark of a child from 16 to 18 and;

Senator Klein Honors Vietnam Veteran and Bronx Community Leader, Silvio Mazzella, at Veterans Hall of Fame in Albany

ALBANY, NY – Senator Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored Bronx native and resident, Silvio Mazzella, at the New York Veterans Hall of Fame Ceremony for his service in the United States Marine Corps. After training in Paris Island, South Carolina, North Carolina, San Diego and Okinawa, he served in Vietnam.

Independent Democratic Conference Hosts Public Hearing on Campaign Finance and Ethics Reform in Albany

ALBANY, NY – Today in the capital, the New York State Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference hosted its fourth statewide hearing on campaign finance and ethics reform. At the hearing, experts offered testimony on proposals to publicly finance campaigns, overhaul the state’s porous campaign finance laws, and eliminate conflicts of interests between lobbyists and campaign consultants.

Silvio Mazzella

Silvio Mazzella was born and raised in an Italian neighborhood in the Morrisania section of the South Bronx. It was an area where many people from Ponza had settled. Silvio is the youngest of fi ve siblings.Silvio graduated with Honors from Our Lady of Pity School where he was a member of Don Bosco Boys Club. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School, Northeastern University and Monroe College and has a degree in Business Administration.In 1966, he voluntarily enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained in Parris Island, South Carolina, North Carolina, San Diego, and Okinawa and then served in Vietnam. Senator Klein Honors Bronx Student, Aspiring Filmmaker and Riverdale Resident, Sofie Somoroff, at 16th Annual Women of Distinction Celebration

ALBANY, NY – Senator Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored Sofie Somoroff, a seventeen year old from the Bronx at the 16th Annual Women of Distinction celebration that took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Late last year, Somoroff was named the Grand Prize Winner of the OnBuzz Reach for the Stars Aspiring Filmmakers Contest for her lyrical, 71-second “micro-movie,” entitled “Me,” that concerns the subject of bullying. Somoroff is a junior at Bronx High School of Science and a resident of Riverdale.

Every year, the Botanical Garden reserves 20 orchids for one non-profit in Senator Klein’s district. Sen. Jeff Klein Announces Inclusion of Hire-a-Vet Tax Credit in NYS Budget to Combat High Unemployment Rate Among Young Returning Veterans

BRONX, N.Y. – Today, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) announced that his Hire-a-Vet Tax Credit, a program that will provide every business that hires a post-9/11 veteran with a tax credit of up to $15,000, is now officially a part of state budget. Senator Klein fought for the tax credit during this year’s budget negotiations after learning about the sky-high unemployment rate among New York’s returning veterans.
