Senator Klein Announces Tax Credits for Small Businesses; Highlights Impact on Bronx Businesses

BRONX, NY - Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), alongside over 35 business owners in the Bronx and Westchester, announced specific tax credits and reforms passed in the budget that will deliver targeted help to small businesses. The press conference was held at Spoto's, a local restaurant in the Bronx.

Senator Jeffrey D. Klein said, “With the early, bipartisan passage of the 2013-14 budget, I am proud to announce that this budget reflects a commitment to helping our small businesses grow. I have always believed that small, locally-owned businesses are the backbone of our communities and I am pleased to have announced specific provisions in the budget that will help to support them.

Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein and the Independent Democratic Conference Release Comprehensive Plan to Overhaul Campaign Finance Laws and Implement Comprehensive Public Financing System for State Elections

 

April 12, 2013 - Today, Senate Co-Leader and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and members of the IDC proposed sweeping reforms to New York State’s current campaign finance laws. The IDC’s proposal would introduce a comprehensive system of public campaign financing under which all qualifying candidates would be eligible to receive public matching funds. Under the IDC’s plan, candidates opting not to participate in the public financing system would be required to participate in a completely overhauled campaign finance system.

Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein, IDC, and TV Star Padma Lakshmi Kick-off Teen Health Awareness Campaign in Albany Launch New Online Survey for Teens, www.TeenHealthNY.com, to Inform Policy Makers and Announce New Education Fund to Direct Resources

Albany, NY -- At the State Capitol on Wednesday, Padma Lakshmi, host of Bravo TV’s Top Chef and co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, joined Senate Majority Coalition Leader Jeffrey D. Klein and members of the Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference to kick-off a Teen Health Awareness Campaign.  The campaign focuses on reducing adolescent obesity, educating students about the health consequences of short and long-term alcohol and substance abuse, and raising awareness among young women and health professionals about endometriosis, an often undiagnosed but debilitating disease.  March is Endometriosis month.  At the press conference, Senator Klein was joined by seventh graders from JHS 141, a middle school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

Senator Jeff Klein Announces Release of $646,271 Grant for Village of Pelham Wolfs Lane Park

PELHAM, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined Village of Pelham Mayor Ed Hotchkiss, Deputy Mayor Geoff Lewis and Pelham Trustees, Suzie Marciona, Adam Kagan and Paul McGoldrich in announcing the release of $646,271 in capitol grant funds for improvements to Wolfs Lane Park.

 

Senator Klein deemed the grant a “boost for the Village of Pelham and for the community at large. I believe that this funding will allow the park to better serve the residents – particularly the children - of Pelham. Parks bring communities together and the investment in Wolfs Lane Park improvements now will give Pelham a place of beauty, recreation and community building for many years to come.”

IDC Press Conference: Updating New York State's Risk Assessment and Management Strategy

Responding to perennial increases in hurricane and disaster related spending, the Independent Democratic Conference will introduce legislation recommending the creation of a new statewide office charged with improving New York's risk management and cost avoidance practices. The new office, which will be funded exclusively by annual cost savings generated by it's operations, will use the same modern-day risk assessment techniques that currently save states such as Florida and Texas tens of millions of dollars each year. The IDC estimates that by utilizing modern-day risk management practices, New York State could avoid up to $150 million in spending over the next three years.

Senator Klein Announces Initiatives Responding to Hurricane Sandy Task Force Recommendations

PELHAM, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined local elected officials, law enforcement officials, community leaders and task force participants today to announce initiatives designed to respond to issues outlined by the Pelham Task Force on Hurricane Sandy last month. BRONX, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined former New York City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, local elected officials, African-American Community leaders and nearly 300 constituents in celebrating Black History Month at his annual breakfast at Villa Barone Manor today. At the breakfast, the program included a keynote address from former New York City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, musical performances from the Reverend Nathaniel Tyler Lloyd Legacy Choir of Trinity Baptist Church and the presentation of awards to African-American community leaders for their work in the district and beyond.

Senator Klein and Health Officials, Four Loko Agrees to Change Misleading Packaging and Labeling

NEW YORK, NY – After over a year of pressure by State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), the Independent Democratic Conference, and other health advocacy organizations, the makers of popular alcoholic malt beverage Four Loko, have agreed to make significant changes to their packaging.  On Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission said that the creators, Chicago based Phusion Projects, would be required to place an “alcohol facts panel” in the back of their malt-flavored beverages.  The containers will also be re-packaged so they can be resealed, a measure that experts say will reduce the likelihood of customers guzzling down the beverage in one short sitting.

Senator Klein Visits with Students in PS 83’s Project BOOST Program at Restaurant in Morris Park

BRONX, NY -  Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined students, parents and teachers from PS 83 today for lunch at 900 Park, a local restaurant on Morris Park Avenue. At the lunch, Senator Klein learned how a grant he provided through Project Boost to 12 schools in his district, including PS 83, has been integrated into the curriculum. The lunch itself was an event for BOOST children to offer them the opportunity to dine at a local restaurant and meet Senator Klein. Senator Klein and Miss USA Nana Meriwether Host 18th Annual “Valentines for Veterans” Event

BRONX, NY - Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) pictured above with Miss USA 2012 Nana Meriwether and Kelli Faugnan, a fourth grader from PS 83, giving gift bags and valentines to veteran patients from the James J. Peters VA Medical Center. Senator Klein and Ms. Meriwether hosted “Valentines for Veterans” at the Center. After the program, Senator Klein, Ms. Meriwether and children from the PS 83 Children’s Choir helped distribute valentines and gift bags given by children at 25 schools across the Bronx.
