NY1 Covers Sen. Klein's Bill To Better Prepare Police For Interactions With The Mentally Disturbed

Several interactions between police and the mentally ill have ended with violence, bringing attention to an issue that law enforcement officials and advocacy groups want to see remedied. NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report.In March, police shot and killed a knife-wielding man at 1545 Rhinelander Avenue in the Bronx. It turns out he was mentally disturbed and had been arrested 16 times.Lawmakers say the shooting might have been avoided if police knew about the man's history."Over the last year at 1545, there's been 150 calls to 911," said Bronx State Senator Jeff Klein.

SEN. KLEIN BRINGS FREE ASTHMA SCREENINGS TO LOCUST POINT

 

BRONX, NY – State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), Jacobi Medical Center/North Central Bronx Hospital, St Barnabus, and the Locust Point Civic Association have collaborated to bring free asthma screening to children in the Bronx on Monday, July 18.

The screenings, which will be open to all children in the Bronx, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Locust Point Civic Association, 3300 Tierney Place, Bronx, New York 10465.

Registration is mandatory for a screening.

The State Senate today passed legislation advanced and co-sponsored by the Independent Democratic Conference that would commence a forensic audit of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The audit, which would be conducted by an independent outside auditing firm and be paid for by the authority, would be the first true top-to-bottom review of the MTA.
