Senator Klein, Assemblyman Dinowitz, Announce New Legislation Aimed at Cracking Down on Black Market for Stolen iPhones

Bronx, NY – Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz (D-Riverdale), Chair of the Assembly’s Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee, introduced new legislation today aimed at stemming the tide of iPhone thefts across New York City. Over the past several years, iPhone thefts in New York City have soared. Current NYPD statistics show that Apple device thefts are up 10% this year—and with the September release of the new, technologically advanced iPhone 5S, some experts are predicting an even greater increase by year’s end.

Senator Klein and UFT President Michael Mulgrew Announce $700,000 Grant for 16 ‘Community Learning Schools’ Citywide

BRONX, NY – Standing in front of the steps of P.S. 83 on Rhinelander Avenue in the Bronx, Senator Klein and United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew announced a $700,000 grant, secured by the State Senate in the 2013-14 budget, for the New York City Community Learning Schools Initiative. This grant will be used to fund 16 community learning schools during the 2013-14 school year, including P.S. 83, P.S. 14 and the International School for Liberal Arts in the Bronx. The grant was advocated and secured by Senator Klein and his colleagues in the 2013-14 State Budget.

Senator Klein hosts First Annual Clam Chowder Festival on City Island

CITY ISLAND, NY - Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) hosted the first annual City Island Clam Chowder Festival during the annual City Island Chamber of Commerce Arts & Crafts Fall Fair this Sunday by Hawkins Park. Fair goers had an opportunity to try samples of sixteen different chowders from fourteen participating restaurants, having the opportunity to vote for their favorite.

Three awards were given. The Lobster House won the People’s Choice Chowder, Sammy’s won for the best Manhattan Clam Chowder and the Sea Shore won for the best New England Clam Chowder. Senator Klein, Assemblyman Benedetto, Food Network Star and City Island Native Michael Proietti and City Island Current Fleet Captain Chris Cullen judged the competition.

Standing Together for the Palisades: U.S. Congressman Eliot Engel, Senators Klein, Espaillat and Assemblyman Dinowitz Join NY and NJ Environmental Groups in Call for LG Electronics to Lower Planned Height of Building Headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Following the recent decision by Bergen County Superior Court to uphold LG Electronics’ plan to construct a 143 foot building headquarters by the Palisades in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, State Senator Jeff Klein, U.S. Congressman Eliot Engel, State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz joined representatives from the coalition group, Protect the Palisades, in calling for LG Electronics to lower the height of their planned construction.

A variance in the zoning law along the Palisades authorized LG Electronics to build above the 35 foot maximum height restriction. If constructed, the LG Electronics headquarters would pierce above the Palisades’ treeline, scarring an iconic landscape and setting a precedent for similar development.

RIVERDALE, NY- This week, Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Riverdale) co-authored a letter to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, urging him to intervene on behalf of New Jersey and New York residents in the planned construction of a new 143 foot building for LG Electronics Corporation in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, by the Palisades.

In sending the letter to Governor Christie, Klein and Dinowitz join a chorus of New York and New Jersey lawmakers and residents who believe that the office tower will disrupt the natural beauty of Palisades. RIVERDALE, NY — Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and PS 81 parents today to release new statistics demonstrating a pattern of dangerous speeding near PS 81, an elementary school in Riverdale. New York State Senate Passes Klein Bill to Stop Homeowner Insurance Scams

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Tuesday, the New York Senate passed legislation to protect homeowners from insurance scams by establishing a strict firewall between public adjusters and contractors. The legislation (S.3771A) was written by Senator Klein in response to a series of complaints filed by homeowners against City Island-based Adjustrite, a contracting firm that had established a coordinated scheme whereby a public adjuster directed homeowners to a local contractor with whom he worked and had a nefarious financial arrangement. The bill, known as the “Gayla Marsh Bill,” was named after Gayla Marsh, who fell victim to Adjustrite. Her son, Chancy Marsh, notified Senator Klein’s office and, together, identified other victims of Adjustrite.

Senate Unanimously Passes Klein Bill Aimed at Fighting Childhood Obesity in High Risk Communities

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Monday night, the New York State Senate passed legislation to combat childhood obesity by implementing a wide array of initiatives. These initiatives include: expanding community gardens where fresh produce is grown, kick-starting new obesity programs that encourage schoolchildren to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and launching new services through Cornell University that provide obesity and respiratory disease prevention programs in high risk areas. Additionally, New York State will establish direct marketing campaigns aimed at encouraging children in high-risk neighborhoods to consume healthy foods.
