Senator Klein and Assemblyman Crespo Team Up to Rid Bronx of Violent Nightclubs

HUNTS POINT, NY – Standing in front of the infamous nightclub, Club Eleven, in the Hunts Point area of the Bronx, Senator Klein and Assemblyman Crespo announced legislation passed by both houses in the state legislature that would close the information gap between the New York Police Department and State Liquor Authority when it comes to crimes committed at bars, nightclubs and restaurants with liquor licenses.

Standing Together for the Palisades: U.S. Congressman Eliot Engel, Senators Klein, Espaillat and Assemblyman Dinowitz Join NY and NJ Environmental Groups in Call for LG Electronics to Lower Planned Height of Building Headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Following the recent decision by Bergen County Superior Court to uphold LG Electronics’ plan to construct a 143 foot building headquarters by the Palisades in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, State Senator Jeff Klein, U.S. Congressman Eliot Engel, State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz joined representatives from the coalition group, Protect the Palisades, in calling for LG Electronics to lower the height of their planned construction.

A variance in the zoning law along the Palisades authorized LG Electronics to build above the 35 foot maximum height restriction. If constructed, the LG Electronics headquarters would pierce above the Palisades’ treeline, scarring an iconic landscape and setting a precedent for similar development.

RIVERDALE, NY- This week, Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Riverdale) co-authored a letter to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, urging him to intervene on behalf of New Jersey and New York residents in the planned construction of a new 143 foot building for LG Electronics Corporation in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, by the Palisades.

In sending the letter to Governor Christie, Klein and Dinowitz join a chorus of New York and New Jersey lawmakers and residents who believe that the office tower will disrupt the natural beauty of Palisades. ALBANY, NY- On Wednesday, the New York State Senate passed legislation sponsored by Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) aimed at protecting New York teens from one of the most insidious and dangerous muscle building supplements on store shelves today. The bill (S.2377-A) bans the sale and distribution of any dietary supplement containing DMAA, a dangerous chemical compound found in over a dozen products sold in GNC stores across the state.

New York State Senate Passes Klein Bill to Stop Homeowner Insurance Scams

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Tuesday, the New York Senate passed legislation to protect homeowners from insurance scams by establishing a strict firewall between public adjusters and contractors. The legislation (S.3771A) was written by Senator Klein in response to a series of complaints filed by homeowners against City Island-based Adjustrite, a contracting firm that had established a coordinated scheme whereby a public adjuster directed homeowners to a local contractor with whom he worked and had a nefarious financial arrangement. The bill, known as the “Gayla Marsh Bill,” was named after Gayla Marsh, who fell victim to Adjustrite. Her son, Chancy Marsh, notified Senator Klein’s office and, together, identified other victims of Adjustrite.

Senate Unanimously Passes Klein Bill Aimed at Fighting Childhood Obesity in High Risk Communities

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Monday night, the New York State Senate passed legislation to combat childhood obesity by implementing a wide array of initiatives. These initiatives include: expanding community gardens where fresh produce is grown, kick-starting new obesity programs that encourage schoolchildren to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and launching new services through Cornell University that provide obesity and respiratory disease prevention programs in high risk areas. Additionally, New York State will establish direct marketing campaigns aimed at encouraging children in high-risk neighborhoods to consume healthy foods.

Senator Jeff Klein Joins City Island’s Pilot Cove Manor Residents to Commemorate Arrival of New Senior Van

CITY ISLAND, NY – This afternoon, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined Pilot Cove Manor Residents and community leaders to commemorate the arrival of a new senior van for Pilot Cove Manor nursing facility, home to over 100 seniors.

New York State IDC Day Care Report

The IDC released a new, investigative report today revealing the lackluster state of day care centers across New York. In preparing the report, the IDC examined on-site inspection reports of over 1,500 day care centers statewide.

The inspections, which are regularly conducted by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), revealed that hundreds of day care centers across New York have accrued multiple violations over the past 24 months, with little or no enforcement by OCFS.

Senate Passes Klein Bill Toughening Child Pornography Laws

ALBANY, NEW YORK – On Thursday, the New York State Senate passed legislation to impose harsher penalties against child pornographers, including increased prison time by way of consecutive sentences, as well as changing punishments from felonies to first degree crimes. The bill also extends protections to all children under the age of 18. Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) is the prime sponsor of the legislation.

The legislation (S2266), would amend current law with the following measures:

1) Ensure that criminals face longer periods in prison when charged with multiple crimes by imposing consecutive sentences;

2) Provide additional protection to minors by increasing the age benchmark of a child from 16 to 18 and;
