Senator DeFrancisco has been reading stories, delivering educational coloring books, and presenting certificates to children at various local libraries throughout the summer, as part of the 2014 New York State Senate Summer Reading Program.

Zoo to You is a traveling, educational program that visits schools, libraries, and community centers to increase awareness about animals, such as birds, reptiles, and invertebrates - among many others.
Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced on August 1, 2014, that Governor Cuomo signed his legislation (S.7108) creating “Vince’s Law” to help tackle the serious issue of persistent drunk drivers.
The legislation will extend the time period, in which multiple DWI convictions can occur, in order to allow for stiffer penalties. Under the new law, if a driver is convicted of three or more Driving While Intoxicated-related offenses within 15 years, that person would be charged with a Class D felony and face up to seven years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Prior to the new law, the look back period was only 10 years.

On July 28, 2014, at East Syracuse Village Hall, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco joined Jon Nappa of Bruin Recycling and Alice Kim of Time Warner Cable to present a $1,000 check to Flags and Flowers for the Veterans. The donation was generated through an electronics recycling event, held this past June in East Syracuse, that Senator DeFrancisco sponsored, along with Time Warner Cable and Bruin Recycling.
Senator John A. DeFrancisco joined other state and local officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Upstate Cancer Center on July 18, 2014. Upstate Cancer Center encompasses 90,000 square feet and will occupy three of the five floors inside the new facility that adjoins Upstate University Hospital. The center features new cancer-fighting technology, a healing garden and a meditation room, plus much more.

Senator John A. DeFrancisco presented Michelle McKenna with a proclamation to recognize her for her efforts on June 27, 2014. Michelle succesfully owned and operated the cafe located at the State Office Building in Syracuse for nearly 14 years.

On June 24, 2014, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco helped celebrate finished renovations to the DeWitt Town Center, located at 3179 Erie Blvd. East. The shopping and business center recently added six new tenants, including a new Time Warner Cable office.
State Senator John A. DeFrancisco presented Hope for Bereaved Founder and Executive Director Therese Schoeneck with a proclamation to help commemorate the 35th anniversary of the organization. Hope for Bereaved held an open house and garden dedication at its main center at 4500 Onondaga Boulevard on June 24, 2014.
On June 23, 2014, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco made a special visit to Irene Manna's fourth-grade class at State Street School in Skaneateles to recognize students for their outstanding efforts to try and make the wood frog New York's official state amphibian. Senator DeFrancisco introduced legislation to designate the wood frog as the state's official amphibian, after receiving many compelling essays from students in the class. The New York State Senate passed the bill on June 10, 2014.
Senator DeFrancisco was joined in the classroom by Assemblyman Gary Finch, the bill's Assembly sponsor. Both legislators answered questions about the legislative process.
On June 14, 2014, Senator John A. DeFrancisco sponsored his second annual electronics recycling event, which was free to the public. Hundreds of residents dropped off their old televisions, computers and various other electronics during the event held at Time Warner Cable on Fair Lakes Road in East Syracuse. Proceeds from the recyling of these items will benefit a local organization that was formed by a group of caring children to purchases flags and flowers for Veterans Park in East Syracuse. The event was made possible by community partners: Time Warner Cable, Bruin Recyling, and Flags and Flowers for the Veterans.
Senator John A. DeFrancisco toured Time Warner Cable's new training facility on Davis Road in Clay on June 13, 2014. The training center, which is designed like an actual home, will provide technicians with real life learning experiences. Senator DeFrancisco also spoke during the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Senator John A. DeFrancisco was pleased to present merit certificates to members of the Wheeler Elementary Student Council on June 6, 2014, in recognition of their outstanding efforts in collecting phones for his annual Cell Phones for Soldiers collection drive. Over the past few years, Wheeler Elentary has collected hundreds of used mobile phones to help provide prepaid calling cards to deployed U.S. military members.
