Senator DeFrancisco in the "Fight for a Future" with Boxing Hall of Fame Coach Ray Rinaldi

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco took the ring on Saturday night to help in the fight against youth violence.  The match titled 'Fight for a Future" benefited the Ray Rinaldi Foundation, which provides healthy alternatives to at-risk youth living in the Greater Syracuse area. Ray Rinaldi is a Syracuse Hall of Fame Boxing Coach who operates the West and North Area Athletic and Education Centers. 

The match was declared a draw by Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler, who served as the referee. Senator DeFrancisco's corner man was Syracuse Common Council President Van Robinson, and Ray Rinaldi's corner man was Assemblyman William Magnarelli.

Senator DeFrancisco Speaks During the Onondaga Community College Baseball and Softball Fields Complex Dedication

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco participated in the dedication ceremony for Onondaga Community College's new baseball and softball fields complex on April 24, 2014.  Senator DeFrancisco, a supporter of the project, spoke during the dedication ceremony and then joined in on a ceremonial pitch.

Both fields are constructed with artifical turf, and the complex has a seating capacity of 475 belacher-style seats.

Senator DeFrancisco Participates in the 2014 Big Read Event at the WCNY Education Center in Syracuse

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco is pictured participating in a mock radio interview during the Big Read event at the WCNY Education Center on Sunday, March 30, 2014.  Big Read supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs to encourage reading by diverse audiences. Senator DeFrancisco helped secure a state grant for the program.  

The local Big Read event was sponsored by the Onondaga County Public Library and CNY READS ONE BOOK.

Senator DeFrancisco Celebrates the 65th Anniversary of the Lakeside Fire Department

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco spoke during a dinner celebration on March 29, 2014, to mark the 65th anniversary of the Lakeside Fire Department in Lakeland. Senator DeFrancisco presented a legislative resolution to honor all of the past and present members of the department.

Senator John DeFrancisco Recognizes Music Educator of the Year John Spillett

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco is pictured holding a legislative resolution with John Spillett, who was inducted into the SAMMYS Hall of Fame as Music Educator of the Year.  Spillett, who taught band at Solvay High School for more than 30 years, also operates a private music studio and plays the saxophone professionally throughout the Central New York community and beyond.  The SAMMYS Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse on March 6, 2014.

Senator DeFrancisco's 2013-2014 Cell Phones for Soldiers Collection Drive Breaks Record Amount

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco is pleased to announce that his 2013/2014 Cell Phones for Soldiers collection drive has resulted in nearly 1,600 mobile phones - a record amount!

Senator DeFrancisco would like to thank the Central New York community for once again answering the call to help support this worthy cause and break a record for two consecutive years!  Due to the community’s generosity, Cell Phones for Soldiers, a national nonprofit organization, will be able to recycle these gently-used donated phones to provide soldiers serving overseas with approximately 3,000 pre-paid calling cards.  That’s about 3,000 hours, 180,000 minutes, of FREE phone time for deployed troops to call home.

Franciscan Companies Donate More than 500 Phones to Senator DeFrancisco's Cell Phones for Soldiers Collection Drive

On December 17, 2013, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco received the largest single donation to benefit his Cell Phones for Soldiers collection drive -- more than 500 mobile phones from Franciscan Companies and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center.  This outstanding donation will provide more than 1,000 hours of free talk time to our soldiers serving overseas.

Senator DeFrancisco Moderates Common Core Community Forum at Fayetteville-Manlius High School

On December 3, 2013, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco served as the moderator of a community forum on the Common Core Standards, which was held at Fayetteville-Manlius High School.  New York State Education Commissioner John King attended the forum to answer questions and listen to comments from the public regarding Common Core and teacher evaluations.  About 200 parents, teachers and community members attended the event.  Also participating in the forum were Senator David Valesky, Assembly members, Will Barclay, Al Stirpe and Gary Finch (not pictured in photo), and Board of Regents Vice Chancellor Anthony Bottar.
