Senator DeFrancisco would like to thank the Central New York community for once again answering the call to help support this worthy cause and break a record for two consecutive years! Due to the community’s generosity, Cell Phones for Soldiers, a national nonprofit organization, will be able to recycle these gently-used donated phones to provide soldiers serving overseas with approximately 3,000 pre-paid calling cards. That’s about 3,000 hours, 180,000 minutes, of FREE phone time for deployed troops to call home.
On December 17, 2013, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco received the largest single donation to benefit his Cell Phones for Soldiers collection drive -- more than 500 mobile phones from Franciscan Companies and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. This outstanding donation will provide more than 1,000 hours of free talk time to our soldiers serving overseas.

On December 3, 2013, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco served as the moderator of a community forum on the Common Core Standards, which was held at Fayetteville-Manlius High School. New York State Education Commissioner John King attended the forum to answer questions and listen to comments from the public regarding Common Core and teacher evaluations. About 200 parents, teachers and community members attended the event. Also participating in the forum were Senator David Valesky, Assembly members, Will Barclay, Al Stirpe and Gary Finch (not pictured in photo), and Board of Regents Vice Chancellor Anthony Bottar.

Senator DeFrancisco saw how the facility transforms food scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich compost. OCCRA's Amboy Compost Facility generates 36,000 cubic yards of compost each year.

Valesky presented Mr. William Cregg and Mr. John Harke of Central New York with the New York State Senate Liberty Award. The Liberty medal, which was created by the State Senate in 2000, is given to those civilians who have exhibited exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.
