SENATOR DEFRANCISCO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO HELP INCREASE EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER

Senator John A. DeFrancisco (R-I-C, Syracuse) has announced that legislation he supported (S6769B) to improve early breast cancer detection has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo. The new law will increase women’s awareness of the presence of dense breast tissue found during a mammography exam.  Dense breast tissue can make it more difficult to detect tumors.

Senator DeFrancisco said, “This new law will help save women’s lives by increasing their awareness of a known breast cancer risk factor.  Along with routine breast cancer screenings, the information provided by physicians to those with dense breast tissue can help increase early detection of the disease and give patients a greater ability to make educated decisions about their health.”

SENATOR DEFRANCISCO SUPPORTS BREAST CANCER FIGHT WITH NEW STATE LAW

Senator John A. DeFrancisco (R-I-C, Syracuse) announced that a new law will take effect tomorrow, January 19, 2013, which will require patients to be informed by their health care provider when dense breast tissue has been discovered during a breast exam. Additionally, patients must be informed about the importance of discussing additional screening options with their doctor.

“Dense breast tissue increases the risk of a woman developing breast cancer, and it makes the cancer harder to find. We need to educate women on this fact so that they can take the extra measures necessary in order to detect cancer as early as possible. As we all know, early detection is the key to a positive outcome in the fight against breast cancer,” said Senator DeFrancisco.
