Establishes temporary retirement benefit incentives for certain public employees for the fiscal year 2010-2011; provides additional service credit for certain members of NYS&LERS, NYSTRS, NYCTRS, NYCBERS and NYCERS; eliminates the early retirement reductions at 25 years of service instead of at 30 years of service for retirement during a specified 90 day period for Tier 2, 3 and 4 members of such retirement systems.

Green Doesn't Mean Good

To the Editor:

 In your September 18, 2009 issue of the Central New York Business Journal you published an article announcing that the legislature passed the Green Jobs/Green New York program.  The bill redirects $112 million of NYSERDA funds to a revolving loan fund to provide resources to residents to weatherize their homes, provide energy audits and the like.

 The bill helps to make New York green and helps to create green jobs, so it must be good.  Not so fast.  I voted against the bill.  Let me tell you why.

Prostate Cancer Screening Could Save Your Life

  Because prostate cancer kills so many of its victims, September has been designated Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.  It is a treatable and curable disease if caught early enough, yet every 17 minutes a husband, father, son brother, grandfather, uncle, or friend dies from this disease.  Most men are not aware that 33 percent more likely to get prostate cancer than women are to get breast cancer.  Of the almost 219,000 cases that are diagnosed this year more than 27,000 will die because they did not get an examination soon enough.
