Senator DeFrancisco with 2012 New York State Middle School Principal of the Year Award Winner James Werbeck

Senator John A. DeFrancisco honored Solvay Middle School Principal James Werbeck with a Resolution on May15, 2012. Werbeck was named the 2012 New York State Middle School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State.  James Werbeck and his wife, Susie, were recognized by Senator DeFrancisco from the Senate Floor in Albany.

Senator DeFrancisco Congratulates Recipients of New York State's First Veterans Build

On May 17, 2012, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco helped celebrate the first-ever Veterans Build through Syracuse Habitat for Humanity. The two houses, located at 113 and 115 Fitch Street, were built for disabled veterans, Mike Smith and Felicia Plunkett. They are affordable, energy efficient, and handicap accessible. Senator DeFrancisco Presents Award to the Family of 2012 Women of Distinction Honoree Colleen H. Mastine

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco is pictured with the family of Colleen H. NEW YORK SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION TO ASSIST SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES IN SECURING GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced that the New York Senate passed legislation today, May 15, 2012, which would give state agencies the authority to determine whether a letter of credit is needed for a state contract, and would limit the amount of the letter of credit to 3 percent of the total contract award.

“A three percent cap on a letter of credit would help small and medium-sized businesses, because a letter of credit requirement adversely impacts a company’s ability to secure a loan, and it ties up resources that a company needs for operating expenses and growth,” said Senator DeFrancisco.

NEW YORK SENATE HONORS COLLEEN H. MASTINE AS A 2012 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION

Senator John A. DeFrancisco honored Colleen H. Mastine with the 2012 "Women of Distinction" award for the 50th Senate District.  The New York State Senate recognizes women from Central New York and throughout the state at a reception in Albany.

"I am proud to honor my former colleague and friend, Colleen Mastine, who served in my district office for many years," said Senator DeFrancisco.

"Through her work in the Senate, she helped so many citizens in our community. I commend her for a lifetime of helping others, and for the genuine caring and concern that she exhibited, as she worked with people to solve their problems," said Senator DeFrancisco.

SENATE PASSES BILL AUTHORIZING FIVE-YEAR EXTENSION OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS RELAY SERVICE CENTER

Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced that the New York State Senate passed on May 8, 2012, his bill (S6794-A) that would authorize a five-year extension for the New York Telecommunications Relay Center to remain in Syracuse.

“This bill requires that the New York Telecommunications Relay Service Center remain in Syracuse, and along with it, nearly 100 private-sector jobs,” said Senator DeFrancisco.

“As the center continues to grow and to add new services, I am hopeful that more telecommunications jobs will be created in Syracuse,” added Senator DeFrancisco.

Senator DeFrancisco Discusses Current Legislation on Your Voice in Albany

On this week’s edition of Your Voice, I discuss my bill that passed in the New York State Senate, requiring state agencies to pay timely interest on money owed to not-for-profits. This legislation presently awaits action in the State Assembly.

I also discuss legislation to better protect our children from sex offenders. Plus, I share my concern over some of the recent errors with the state’s student exams.

SENATE PASSES BILL CREATING THE NEW YORK STATE GOVERNOR’S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS

Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced on May 7, 2012, that the New York State Senator passed his bil (S2856-A) that would establish a New York state Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Health. 
“Obesity in children is on the rise.  More than 30 percent of children ages six to 11 are overweight, and the numbers are even worse for adolescents,” said Senator DeFrancisco.

SENATOR DEFRANCISCO ANNOUNCES STATE GRANTS FOR LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN ONONDAGA COUNTY

Senator John A. DeFrancisco has announced that several libraries in Onondaga County have been awarded New York State Public Library Construction Grants to help make necessary improvements to their buildings.
The local grants are among 192 construction grants awarded to public libraries and library systems throughout New York state, which are supported by $14 million in capital funds for public library construction provided in the State Budget.
