Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced legislation that would make it a crime to use the name, image, or likeness of any current or former member of the armed forces or state militia for commercial purposes without permission, passed the New York state Senate on June 13, 2012.
“There have been numerous incidents where the names of soldiers killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have been used without concern for the solider or the soldier’s family,” said Senator DeFrancisco. “Our military members, veterans and their families have made tremendous sacrifices for our country, and it is essential that we respect their privacy.”
State Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced that his mortgage tax legislation (S2906) passed the New York state Senate on June 12, 2012.
The bill would allow property owners who are refinancing their mortgages with a new bank to demand either a certificate of discharge, which shows that the mortgage is satisfied, or an assignment of mortgage, which shows a transfer from their original bank lender to a new lender.
State Senator John A. DeFrancisco honored the Cicero-North Syracuse Girls' Basketball Team with a Senate Resolution in Albany on June 11, 2012. The basketball team earned the Class AA State Championship.
Senator DeFrancisco also honored Senior Breanna Stewart with a resolution, commending her for receiving the 2011-12 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year Award.
This is the second consecutive year that the Cicero-North Syracuse Girls’ Basketball Team has won the New York State Class AA Championship.
State Senator John A. DeFrancisco presented Charlie Hollis with a Senate Resolution, on June 9, 2012, during the 2012 Polish Festival in Syracuse. Mr. Hollis was named "Pole of the Year" for his many civic activities that have improved the quality of life in Central New York.
On June 8, 2012, Senator John A. DeFrancisco visited Mrs. DeStefano's universal pre-kindergarten class at Solvay Elementary School. For the first time this year, the school district was able to operate its universal pre-k program within the elementary school building. Senator DeFrancisco observed classroom activities, and even joined in using the Smart Board. Solvay's universal pre-kindergarten program is funded by a special grant from the New York State Education Department.

Daiton Daibo-Williams from Salem Hyde Elementary School in Syracuse was the winner of the New York State Senate's 2012 Earth Day Poster Contest from Senator DeFrancisco's district. Daiton's theme was reduce, reuse, and recycle. The Senator visited Daiton at his school on June 7th to dicuss the poster and to meet his art teacher and family.
