February 12, 2011   State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/C/I – Mt. Hope), is condemning the failure of the NYS DEC to approve emergency flood remediation measures in Phoenicia.  In December, Bonacic, along with representatives of Ulster County Executive Michael Hein, met with officials from the DEC, DEP, and Town of Shandaken on the need for emergency repairs to the Stony Clove Creek, in Phoenicia.  The area has been subject to two major floods in recent months.  At that time, the DEP agreed to pay for engineering services to design a solution and the Town agreed to implement the solution.  The sole job of the State DEC was to approve the solution – and the DEC agreed to act fast.

SENATOR BONACIC RELEASES STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR CUOMO'S BUDGET PROPOSAL

“The classic budget rhetoric wars of the past will fail this year – and I suggest the special interests tone down their rhetoric and stand as partners in finding solutions, rather than take out advertisements, which merely fight for the status quo.”

SENATOR BONACIC STATEMENT ON PROPOSED LAYOFFS AT BELLEAYRE

"The DEC, by targeting Belleayre as harshly as they have, has shown misplaced economic priorities. Belleayre makes money for the State and is an asset that is the economic catalyst for our region. The State has made it their economic plan for the Catskills to be a place of outdoor recreation and high quality water. That means, simply, that our region should not take a disproportionate hit in the outdoor tourism industry. To cut jobs at Belleayre will result in job losses for our small businesses throughout the region that depend on Belleayre for their livelihood.

SENATOR BONACIC STATEMENT ON STOCKBRIDGE MUNSEE COMPACT

"Casinos have long been talked about in the Catskills but various road blocks have always gotten in the way. If Governor Paterson signs the Stockbridge Munsee Compact, as his office has told me that he will do, it is another opportunity to create jobs and rekindle tourism in the Catskills. The work will now shift to Washington to have the Federal government approve this casino. Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand have increased clout given the recent elections have made their Democratic Majority smaller. I am hopeful that both of them will use that clout to have the Obama administration approve what the Bush administration would not.

Keeping SUNY Affordable

Dear Friend:

I was the first in my family to go to college. Education created opportunity for me in business, and later in government. My daughter graduated from SUNY New Paltz.  The SUNY schools in our Senate District -- New Paltz, Delhi, and our lo-cal community colleges -- present educational opportunities for area residents and create jobs in the region.

Last year, the Legislature diverted tuition, paid by those who attend SUNY, and sent those dollars to pay for other func-tions of state government. I opposed that move. I believe that taking SUNY tuition and not using it for SUNY amounts to a tax on the students and families who pay tuition.

SENATOR BONACIC'S PLAN TO FIX ALBANY

Like you, I am appalled at some of what I see happening in Albany. That is why I have put party politics aside and worked in a bi-partisan fashion, even against the leaders of my own party, in an effort to clean up Albany.

* I believe that members of the State Legislature who are under investigation for Federal or State criminal violations should not be able to stay in leadership positions in government, and should have the perks of their office taken from them until the investigation is resolved. I was the only Senator to call for the removal of former Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, when it was announced that Bruno was under Federal investigation.
