Senator Flanagan Fights To Enact Property Tax Cap and Provide Tax Relief For Middle Class Taxpayers

In order to provide middle-class taxpayers across the State with relief from soaring property taxes, Senator Flanagan worked with members of the Senate Republican delegation to put forward an amendment to a budget extender that would provide relief to Long Island’s property taxpayers.

Unfortunately, Senate Democrats unanimously voted down the Republican-sponsored amendment that would have enacted a property tax cap, prevented school districts from raising local tax levies this year, and provided middle-class taxpayers across the State with relief from soaring property taxes.

Senator Flanagan Meets With Kings Park Scouts

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently hosted Charles and Colin Tekverk, who are both members of Boy Scout Troop 75 of Kings Park as part of their efforts to achieve the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge.  The meeting with Senator Flanagan helped the boys satisfy one of the requirements of the badge as they strive to become Eagle Scouts.

Senator Flanagan Introduces Legislation to Ban Synthetic Marijuana

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today introduced legislation to ban the sale of synthetic marijuana products that are being smoked by teenagers as an alternative to marijuana.  The fake drug is legally available under a variety of names like K2, Spike 99 and Spice at stores throughout New York State including on Long Island and just blocks away from the State Capitol in Albany.

Senator Flanagan Unveils “Homeowner Protection and Property Tax Rebate Act”

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) joined with the other members of the Senate Republican Conference to unveil the “Homeowner Protection and Property Tax Rebate Act,” a major new tax cut initiative aimed at protecting the taxpayers of New York State.

The main focus of the plan is the restoration of the property tax rebate plan for every middle-class taxpayer.  The rebate would reimburse homeowners based on how much they pay in property taxes and how much they can afford.

Senator Flanagan Reminding Homeowners About New Carbon Monoxide Law

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is reminding all homeowners about a new law that requires most residences in New York State to have at least one working carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.  The new law has been in effect since February 22, 2010 and affects all residences with appliances, devices, or systems that emit carbon monoxide.

This new law is named in honor of Amanda Hansen, a 16-year-old from West Seneca, New York who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sleeping at a friend’s house.  The source of the carbon monoxide was a faulty boiler in the home.

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today joined with other members of the New York State Senate Republican delegation to unveil the Domestic Violence Act of 2010, a comprehensive effort to strengthen the State’s porous and ineffective domestic violence laws.  

This groundbreaking initiative would, among other enhancements, create a specific crime of domestic abuse in State law and provide law enforcement with greater tools to stamp out domestic violence.

Suffolk County Police Department Sponsors Operation Medicine Cabinet

The Suffolk County Police Department will be conducting a drug disposal event on March 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Operation Medicine Cabinet will provide an opportunity for people to dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs in an environmentally-safe manner.

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently hosted Gail Lizardy King of Dix Hills in Albany to honor her selection as Ms. Senior America 2009.  During her visit, Ms. King was given a tour of the Capitol building which included a visit to the historic Red Room where she met Governor David Paterson.
