Senator Flanagan Unveils Blueprint For Jobs

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) joined with his colleagues in the Senate Republican conference today to announce a bold and sweeping job creation plan to improve New York’s business climate so it not only keeps up with other states, but surpasses them.  Among other things, the “Senate Republican Blueprint for Jobs: ReThink. ReVitalize. ReBuild” would cut taxes for one million small businesses and reduce energy costs for every business and residential ratepayer in New York, saving them $2.5 billion.

From the NYSDOT - Long Island Motorists Advised To Use Caution On Roadways

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is advising motorists that forecasts call for rain, snow, wintry precipitation and wind gusts up to 50 MPH which could create hazardous driving conditions particularly later this evening. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution throughout the storm.  Presently, snowfall is predicted during the overnight hours with rain and wind during the day.

Senator Flanagan Announces Family Tax Relief Act

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) joined with the other members of the Senate Republican Conference today in unveiling the Family Tax Relief Act.  This package of tax relief and reform measures is designed to provide a major economic boost to New York’s struggling middle class families. 

The plan would increase tax breaks which have not kept pace with inflation and, in some instances, have not been adjusted for more than 25 years.  The plan would also restore the STAR property tax rebate check program to provide real and direct relief to millions of New Yorkers who pay some of the highest property taxes in the country.

Senator Flanagan Reminds Homeowners To Apply For STAR Program

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is reminding all homeowners that the deadline to apply for the School Tax Relief (STAR) program is March 1st.  Homeowners who are not enrolled in this property tax savings program can apply with their town assessor’s office prior to the deadline.

The STAR program provides homeowners with property tax relief and works in two ways:• Basic STAR is available to homeowners whose primary residence is a house, condominium, cooperative apartment, mobile home or farm house and whose combined total adjusted gross income does not exceed $500,000, regardless of age.  It does not require annual renewal.

Senator Flanagan Calls On Governor Cuomo To Remove Utility Tax Surcharge Extension From Proposed Budget

 Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) joined his colleagues in the Senate Republican Conference and leaders of statewide business organizations to urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to remove the proposed extension of the utility tax surcharge from his Executive Budget.  The surcharge, which has increased utility bills for every ratepayer in the state, is scheduled to expire on March 31, 2014.  The Governor’s proposed five-year extension would cost businesses and consumers a total of almost $3 billion.

Senator Flanagan Honored For Efforts In Fight Against Breast Cancer

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) was recently presented with the "Champion of Exposing the Secret" Award for his efforts in the fight against breast cancer.  The award was presented to him at Adelphi University during an event to celebrate breast cancer survivors sponsored by the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.  Senator Flanagan was honored for passing a new law (S.6769-B) which requires a mammography report to inform patients when they have dense breast tissue and to recommend that such patient have a discussion with their physician about pursuing further screening options.

Statement From Senator Flanagan Regarding Passing of Assemblyman Conte

This week, Huntington lost a true leader and New York State lost a very valued public servant. For me personally, I lost a great colleague and more importantly, a dear friend. Jim Conte passed away after a long battle with cancer. Throughout that period he endured many physical challenges, but he never wavered on things that were important to him, especially his family.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will build and renovate playground areas at ten state Parks across Long Island. The park improvements are funded with $1.35 million from the Governor’s New York Works initiative.

“It is important that children have a safe and engaging place to play, and these NY Works projects will give them just that in State Parks across New York,” said Governor Cuomo. “The numbers tell the story of more and more people visiting the parks, and I encourage everyone to visit these new and improved areas inside the state parks as well as the beauty that New York has to offer.”

Senator Flanagan Delivers First Pitch For Long Island Ducks

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently participated in a time-honored tradition when he threw out the first pitch prior to game three of the Liberty Division Championship Series between the Long Island Ducks and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip.  Senator Flanagan delivered the pitch to former New York Met player Bud Harrelson, owner of the Ducks and the current bench coach.

The Ducks, who won the Liberty Division Championship series against the Blue Crabs, will now face the Lancaster Barnstormers in a best-of-five series for the Atlantic League Championship.

Senator Flanagan’s Drug Drop Off Event Gets Over 175 Pounds Of Household Drugs Out Of Community

To help community members get unwanted drugs out of their households, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently hosted a Drug Drop Off event at the Selden Fire Department.  The event, which was held with the cooperation of the Suffolk County Police Department and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, enabled community members to drop off unwanted drugs anonymously and helped collect over 175 pounds of drugs.

Events Planned for September 28 & 29 Focus on Increasing Economic Opportunities for New York’s Growing Hispanic Community

Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos today announced that the Senate and the Hispanic Federation will conduct the second annual Unidad Latina event this week. Unidad Latina is a two-day conference designed to help increase economic opportunities for the growing Hispanic community in New York. It is being held on September 28 and 29 at the Hilton New York in Manhattan.

Senator Flanagan and Education Commissioner King Discuss Education With Kings Park Students

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently joined with New York State Education Department Commissioner John King for a tour of Kings Park High School.  During the visit, the two along with Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, Regent Roger Tilles and a variety of school officials joined with students for a roundtable discussion of education.

The visit was arranged with the cooperation of Dr. Susan Agruso, the Superintendent of the Kings Park Central School District, and the staff at the high school.

Senator Flanagan Sponsors Resolution Making September Hydrocephalus Awareness Month

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently joined with Mia Padron of the Hydrocephalus Association to proclaim September Hydrocephalus Awareness Month and to present the organization with a resolution he sponsored to help raise awareness of the incurable condition.

The pair also used the meeting to inform residents of the 7th annual Hydrocephalus WALK that will take place on Saturday, September 29th at 10:00 a.m. in Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon.  The family fun day and walk will include refreshments, Chinese Auction, bake sale, arts and crafts, DJ, Tae kwon do demo show, balloon animals and other fun events.  WBAB and the New York Islanders will also take part in the day’s events.

Senator Flanagan Joins With Stony Brook University To Promote Prostate Cancer Awareness

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is joining with Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program to provide men throughout our community with free prostate screenings in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness week, which begins on Monday, September 17th.  

Under the direction of Medical Director Howard L. Adler, the program will offer screenings from Monday, September 17th through Thursday, September 20th at the Stony Brook Urology office located in Suite 500 at 24 Research Way in Setauket.

Screenings are available each day from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Due to limited availability and required appointments, residents who wish to take advantage of this free program are urged to call HealthConnect at 631-444-4000 to schedule their screening.
