Senator Flanagan’s Legislation Mandating DWI Testing After Serious Accidents Passes Senate

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced today that the New York State Senate has passed legislation he sponsored that would help increase prosecution of drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  The bill (S1446) would require chemical testing of drivers suspected of being impaired when an accident occurs and results in serious injury or death. 

Under current law, chemical testing is permitted at the discretion of law enforcement following an accident but it is not required.  Additionally, law enforcement needs to establish reasonable cause to order a chemical test.

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) and Assemblyman Michael J. Fitzpatrick (8th Assembly District) have introduced legislation that would allow Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and Councilwoman Lynne C. Nowick to serve out their full four-year terms.  The legislation would uphold the results of the November 2013 election when the voters of the Town of Smithtown overwhelmingly elected Supervisor Vecchio and Councilwoman Nowick to four-year terms.

I am pleased to see that the sitting town board members acknowledge that Supervisor Vecchio and Councilwoman Nowick were duly elected by the voters this past November and have rightly reinstated them to their elected offices.

They deserve to serve their full terms of office as intended and expected by the voters, and I will work with Assemblyman Fitzpatrick to advance state legislation in the hopes of  achieving that goal. I am confident that the board members who have reappointed Supervisor Vecchio and Councilwoman Nowick will do everything in their power to assist us in enacting this state legislation.

Senator Flanagan’s Legislation To Restore School Funding Lost Under The Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) Approved By Senate Education Committee

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that his legislation to accelerate the restoration of funding lost by school districts under the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) has been approved by the Senate Education Committee.  The legislation (S.5452) would establish a definitive timetable for making full restoration of GEA funding to all school districts over a three-year period.

Town of Brookhaven Hosting Free Screening Of The Lone Survivor For Veterans

The Town of Brookhaven will be hosting a FREE screening of the film “The Lone Survivor” for veterans on Tuesday, February 4th at noon at the AMC Loews Theatre in Stony Brook. The movie is based on a true story about four Navy Seals on a deadly mission in Afghanistan which resulted in the deaths of all but one. One of the fallen Seals, Lt. Michael Murphy, lived in Patchogue and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Senator Flanagan Announces Pet Dealer Oversight Law Now In Effect

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently announced the enactment of legislation he supported that will help provide better regulation of animal breeders and pet stores.  The new law (Chapter 553 of 2013 signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo) authorizes local governments to enact more stringent laws than those that currently exist at the state level.

Any new local laws, rules, regulations or ordinances must be at least as stringent as state law and must not result in banning the sale of dogs and cats that are raised in a safe and healthy manner.
