Senator Flanagan Honors 70th Anniversary of D-Day

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) joined with his colleagues in the New York State Senate to honor our World War II veterans by adopting  a resolution that commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Allied Army invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.  This defining day in world history marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe and the eventual end of World War II.

Senator Flanagan Honors Greenlawn Resident As His 2014 Woman Of Distinction

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently honored Filomena Piscitelli of Greenlawn as his 2014 Woman of Distinction.  As part of the honor, Senator Flanagan welcomed Mrs. Piscitelli to Albany to take part in a special Senate Women of Distinction ceremony.

Born in Italy, Mrs. Piscitelli and her late husband came over to America in 1963 to start a new life for their family.  In 1966, she successfully became a citizen of the United States of America while taking care of her two children and helping her husband open Mario’s Shoe Repair in Greenlawn.

Senator Flanagan Announces Legislation To Assist Small Businesses Passes State Senate

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed his legislation to direct more state economic development funding to small businesses enabling them to become more economically competitive, grow, and create more jobs.  The bill (S1530) would require state agencies that award economic development assistance to give preference to small businesses and entrepreneurs because they are most in need of assistance and are significant job creator

Robert Mandel

Robert “Bob” Mandel enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951, during the Korean War, and was assigned to Transport Squadron VR24 and then to Flight Crew status as Radio Operator. Mr. Mandel then joined Fighter Squadron VF44, and was sent to Cuba to support their mission aboard the USS Intrepid.

Mr. Mandel was honorably discharged in 1955 with the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. He is the recipient of the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Filomena Piscitelli

Filomena Piscitelli is a great example of the impact one woman can have on her community, while inspiring all New York residents.

Mrs. Piscitelli was born in Italy. The oldest of fi ve children, she assumed the role of caretaker of her family at a young age. She married the late Mario Piscitelli in June of 1963, and in August of that year, they traveled to America to start a new life. By 1967, their family had grown, with the addition of son Alexander and daughter Maria Rina. As a young mother, Mrs. Piscitelli balanced her family obligations and her work as she helped her husband open Mario’s Shoe Repair in Greenlawn. She proudly recognized her dream of becoming a citizen of the United States in 1966.

Senator Flanagan’s Bill Upholding Smithtown Terms of Office Passes Senate

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate has passed his legislation allowing Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and Councilwoman Lynne C. Nowick to serve their full four-year terms. If enacted into law, the legislation would in effect uphold the results of the November 2013 local election when Smithtown voters overwhelmingly elected Vecchio and Nowick to serve in office.

The legislation is sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblyman Michael J. Fitzpatrick (8th Assembly District).

Stony Brook University Commemorates Opening of Newly Refurbished Recreation Fields

Stony Brook University celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Campus Recreation Field Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the southeast corner of the South P parking area of the campus. Stony Brook University students will have primary use of the three competition size turf and grass fields which measure over nine square acres and include lights for evening practice and competition.

Senator Flanagan Welcomes Commack Boy Scout

     Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently welcomed Dylan Feldman of Boy Scout Troop 403 in Commack to his office.  The Commack Middle School 6th grader met with Senator Flanagan to discuss the constitutional rights and obligations of citizens of the United States.  The meeting was scheduled as part of Dylan’s effort to achieve the rank of First Class Rank Scout. 

     "Scouting presents a tremendous opportunity for young boys to learn about the world they live in and it was enjoyable to help Dylan as he works to achieve his goal.  I enjoyed our visit and wish Dylan all the best in his scouting career,” stated Senator Flanagan.

Senator Flanagan’s Legislation Mandating DWI Testing After Serious Accidents Passes Senate

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced today that the New York State Senate has passed legislation he sponsored that would help increase prosecution of drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  The bill (S1446) would require chemical testing of drivers suspected of being impaired when an accident occurs and results in serious injury or death. 

Under current law, chemical testing is permitted at the discretion of law enforcement following an accident but it is not required.  Additionally, law enforcement needs to establish reasonable cause to order a chemical test.
