Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently joined the doctors and nurses of Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) to celebrate the designation of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by the March of Dimes as a Family Support project site. With the support of a $35,000 grant secured by Senator Flanagan, the NICU Family Support project aims to alleviate the emotional stress of families whose babies are born prematurely or whose newborns are seriously ill. "Being the parent of a premature infant can be stressful and overwhelming.

Senator Flanagan Announces Agreement On Cap On Gasoline Taxes

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced today that an agreement to reduce and cap state sales tax on gasoline has been reached by the Senate and the Assembly. This agreement was pushed for by Senator Flanagan after the Senate passed similar legislation three times in the last year. When enacted, the legislation will go into effect on June 1st of this year to provide relief at the gas pump for the summer driving season."The price of gas is continuing to rise and we need to provide relief to our drivers now.

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently joined Stony Brook University Hospital as it officially opened its new Sleep Disorders Center in Smithtown. The center, located at 240 Middle Country Road, is a new multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art facility that is equipped with eight bedrooms and uses the newest technological advances for conducting sleep studies. Senator Flanagan joined Richard N. Fine, M.D., Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, as he cut the ribbon on the new facility.

To celebrate National Library Week, Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today announced that he has successfully worked to secure over $19 million in funding for the libraries of New York State. This money was included in the Senate budget and the Assembly agreed to the funding during budget negotiations.A key component of the funding is the Senate's plan to use 2000 census numbers to allocate library funding. By discontinuing the use of 1990 census information, the change will allow library funding to accurately reflect changes in population.
