Public Hearing: Due Process Teacher Discipline Without Delay: Reforming Section 3020-a of the Education Law to Meet the Needs of the 21st Century

To seek input on the issue of improving the teacher discipline system throughout the state, Senator John Flanagan, Chairman of the Senate Education Committee, will be hosting a formal hearing on the topic in Albany.  The Committee will solicit testimony from interested parties to examine how New York State can reform the system to provide the appropriate discipline for educator misconduct as well as the appropriate protection of those wrongfully accused.

The hearing will provide an open and fair examination on the policies and mechanisms that can be used to accomplish these goals, as well as their impact on school children, taxpayers and the school system as a whole.          

Scheduled to testify during the hearing are New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, New York State Education Department Chief Executive Officer Val Grey, and New York State United Teachers Executive Vice President Andrew Pallotta.  Testimony will also be provided by representatives from the United Federation of Teachers, New York State School Boards Association, New York State Council of School Superintendents, Conference of Big 5 School Districts, New York State Association of School Attorneys, Small City School Districts and Council of School Supervisors & Administrators.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the public hearing and submit written testimony.

Ms. Pushkin is a cofounder of D.E.N.S.E. (Density Education National Survivors’ Effort), a national grassroots effort to raise awareness about breast density, and its inherent cancer risk, and is also founder of the New York chapter D.E.N.S.E. NY.

Senator Flanagan’s Legislation To Expand Crime Victim’s Rights Passes Senate

            Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that legislation he sponsored to protect the rights of crime victims has passed the New York State Senate.  The legislation would expand the State’s Son of Sam laws by prohibiting all persons who are held responsible for a crime from profiting from their crimes regardless of their plea or conviction.

Senator Flanagan Joins Letter Carriers To Help Stamp Out Hunger

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is encouraging everyone in our community to join this year's National Association of Letter Carrier's (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger food drive.  On Saturday, May 14th, just as they have done for years, letter carriers in our communities will collect food during their normal route to help restock community food banks, pantries and shelters that many families rely on throughout the summer as part of what is now the largest one-day food collection in the nation to provide for those in our community who are in need.

Senate Passes Senator Flanagan’s Home Invasion And Sexual Abuse Legislation

            The New York State Senate recently passed several anti-crime bills to strengthen penalties and create new charges for offenses including two measures sponsored by Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) that would expand the penalties for home invasions and sexual abuse.  The two bills were part of a package that included legislation dealing with bank robberies and driving irresponsibly.  The package will help deter criminals, hold violators accountable and create safer communities throughout the state.

Senator Flanagan Votes To Require Quicker Refunds For New York State Taxpayers

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) voted for legislation that would speed up the delivery of tax refunds owed to taxpayers by the state.  The legislation addresses excessive delays of up to two months from when taxpayers file their return to when they may actually see the refund from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
