Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace has announced that it has become the latest in a long line of companies which has had their customers’ credit data breached. The breach affects an unknown number of credit and debit card customers in three stores (Smithtown, East Meadow and Port Washington) who shopped there between late January and the end of February.

Flanagan And Fitzpatrick Introduce Legislation To Allow Vecchio And Nowick To Serve Full Terms

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) and Assemblyman Michael J. Fitzpatrick (8th Assembly District) have introduced legislation that would allow Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and Councilwoman Lynne C. Nowick to serve out their full four-year terms.  The legislation would uphold the results of the November 2013 election when the voters of the Town of Smithtown overwhelmingly elected Supervisor Vecchio and Councilwoman Nowick to four-year terms.

Q & A About The New York State School Property Tax Exemption (STAR)

What is STAR?

The New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) provides New York homeowners with partial exemptions from school property taxes. If you earn less than $500,000 and own and live in your home, you are probably eligible for the STAR exemption.

There are two types of STAR property tax exemptions:

Basic STAR is available for owner-occupied, primary residences where the owners’ total income is less than $500,000. Basic STAR works by exempting the first $30,000 of the full value of a home from school taxes.

Senator Flanagan Joins With Senator Hannon To Get Insurance Rights For Families Affected By Heroin Epidemic

With the recent death of actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman highlighting the growing impact of heroin and other drugs, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced today that he is joining with Senator Kemp Hannon (6th Senate District) in his effort to provide families affected by addiction with the tools they need to fight this serious disease.  Senators Flanagan and Hannon are sponsoring legislation (S.4623) that would put treatment decisions for those struggling with addiction in the hands of physicians as opposed to insurance companies.

New York Daily News: NYS Senate Education Chairman Praises Regents Changes To Common Core

Senate Education Committee Chairman John Flanagan (R-Suffolk) this afternoon was far less critical than Gov. Cuomo when discussing the changes the Board of Regents have proposed for the Common Core curriculum.

Flanagan praised the Regents for addressing many of the issues that parents and the lawmakers have been calling for. He called the changes a major step in the right direction and said it shows the Regents were listening to the widespread complaints.

“Compared to where they were and where they are today is night and day from where they started,” Flanagan said.

Senator Flanagan Announces Pet Dealer Oversight Law Now In Effect

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently announced the enactment of legislation he supported that will help provide better regulation of animal breeders and pet stores.  The new law (Chapter 553 of 2013 signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo) authorizes local governments to enact more stringent laws than those that currently exist at the state level.

Any new local laws, rules, regulations or ordinances must be at least as stringent as state law and must not result in banning the sale of dogs and cats that are raised in a safe and healthy manner.
